Itinerary description
The Cooloola Great Walk links Rainbow Beach to Noosa North Shore via the eastern high dunes known as the Cooloola sandmass. This one of the largest accumulations of wind-blown sand found along the Queensland coast that has been built up during the last 500,000 years. It conserves unique dune, lake and vegetation systems.
This 61,750 hectare section of the Great Sandy National Park is one of the best conserved landscapes of its kind in eastern Australia. This version describes the hike going from North to South. North to south is a better route because the sun tends to fall on your back during the course of the walk. There are two access points to Cooloola Great Walk: the southern entrance on Noosa North Shore via Tewantin, and the northern entrance from Carlo Sandblow car park at Rainbow Beach.
Taxi services are available in Tewantin and Rainbow Beach but they can be upwards of $350 one way. Bus services are infrequent and not really a viable option unless you plan on a stay at either end.
Bookings for campsites can be made at:
https://qpws.usedirect.com/qpws/
More information is obtainable on
https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/cooloola/journeys/cooloola-great-walk
The campsites have water most of the time and toilets. There are communal storage boxes to put your food in overnight and campsites are segregated.
The best time to do this hike is between March and early November. You will need to avoid doing this hike during the warmer months because conditions are hot and normally wetter.
A beautiful 5 days of hiking that I totally recommend.
