Itinerary description
This easy hike which goes from where North Shore Road crosses Cottonwood Creek to the Pine Point Campground is not very exciting in itself but it does provide access to south facing beaches on Lake Cowichan with good swimming opportunities and great views of the lake. Note that the beaches here are pebble/gravel in nature and not sand.
The same beaches can be reached using the "Pine Point II (Youbou) - Retreads" hike but the parking area at the trail head of this hike is much larger.
Half of the hike is in full sun and half is in the shade of the forest. At the Pine Point public campground, you will find pit toilets.
There is a section of the route between the 20th and 21st waypoints which is along North Shore Road. This road has narrow shoulders and is frequented by LARGE logging trucks. When walking this section listen/watch for them and when one approaches move off of the road.
Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an American Volksports Association rating of 1 A.
