Itinerary description
Please note that this hike has been recorded in two parts as I had to reset my Wikiloc app whilst descending the Pas de na Maria.
This hike takes you across the Puig des Jou ridge and then descends through the difficult Pas de na Maria.
The beginning of the hike is the ascent to Puig des Jou starting from the existing poplar tree in the vicinity of Orient through a gate with a removable retaining wire and circumnavigating the cultivated field.
There are a few barriers some not openable but the path is not prohibited anywhere, so we pass through them.
We can consider the plant zones divided into three parts. The first, lower, responds to terraces and old crops. In the second the domain of the oak is almost total. It is the area of the old coal industry almost exclusively. On the way up we cross the Bosc de son Palou at these levels. On the ascent to Puig des Jou we observe the relatively good condition of the paths and it was not until we reached 800 m that they became paths. In the area covered on the descent from Pas de na Maria we notice the much worse state of the roads, appearing and disappearing, like Guadiana. There we also saw a lime oven. In the third zone, from 800 or more meters, the trees had disappeared, as in almost the entire island: rosemary, "coixinets de monja", reed,... and the occasional isolated oak.
From 900 m on the ascent, the paths become quite blurred, but it does not present any difficulty, since there are no possible variants.
Upon reaching the 950 m high plateau, some extraordinary panoramic views emerge: Es Cornador, Puig Major, ses Vinyes,... It is also crossed by a path that heads towards the Casas de l'Ofre. We arrive at Coll des Jou and then go back to finish the ascent. In the plain, almost at the beginning, to the right, there is a chasm, dangerous if you go through it at night or when you are unaware.
From the plateau we proceed towards Puig along the crest. Depending on the route taken, one may be tempted to hold on to a rock. There are some, slabs actually, treacherous. They can come off when holding on to them.
At the summit we regain strength and then, heading NW, we head towards the beginning of Pas de na Maria, slowly descending, and always cresting. There are few milestones, but if you follow the direction there is not much of a problem. The start of Pas de na Maria will appear on our right spontaneously and very clearly: a large cliff and we will begin the descent, leaving the vertical wall on our left so proceed with caution.
From here you go in a general SSW direction back to our starting point.
Note: When going down the Pas de na Maria, taken the option of going along the Putxet de Son Vidal otherwise authorization is required from the Comasema property.
