Itinerary description
LA CRUZ DE JUANAR
Category: Hill Walk
Meeting Place: Refugio de Juanar, past the hotel, near the large Iron Gate
Distance: 6.2 km
Grading: Medium to Heavy
Itinerary:
This is a challenging walk to the peak of the mountain, la Cruz de Juanar (1.070 m) with fabulous far reaching views on a clear day. Leaving from nearby El Refugio, the walk will turn right by the abandoned hunting observatory, then through forest with a small incline until the start of the climb to a saddle. From the saddle the walk climbs from the west side of the mountain up to the top. At the summit there are great views across to Africa and it is also usually possible to see the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The knee-crunching descent is on the east side back down to Juanar.
Directions to the Meeting Place
From Marbella
Take the A-355 Ojén Road travelling north. Pass the Ojén exits and turn left at the Refugio de Juanar signpost. Follow this winding road all the way up, about 5 kms. At the end, with the Refugio on the right hand side, keep left and drive further until just before the iron gate that is closed to stop cars going up any further. This is the meeting place.
From Coín/Alhaurín
Take the A-355 to Marbella. Pass Monda and after approx. 5-6 km turn right at the Refugio de Juanar signpost. Follow this winding road all the way up, about 5 kms. At the end, with the Refugio on the right hand side, keep left and drive further until just before the iron gate that is closed to stop cars going up any further. This is the meeting place.

I followed the trail January 2021. The route is well written and photos helped a lot. Brilliant, varied terrain. The last push is uneven but well worth the effort. Thank you for sharing.
