Itinerary description
For me, the most beautiful part of the island is The Anaga Mountains in the far north-east of the island and this walk doesnt disappoint. The initial part of the walk to the cave-house village of Chinamada is impressive enough but from there, the long descent into Barranco del Tomadero on the path to Los Batanes is simply epic. Surrounded by jagged, towering peaks and beautiful flora, this path enters a magical world of trickling streams, rock pools, croaking frogs and cave houses. At one point, the 'path' is nothing more than a few narrow footholds in the rock accompanied by chains as handholds to assist you. Reaching the tiny hamlet of Los Batanes, the climbing begins and for around two hours, the path climbs relentlesslessly up, while the stunning views help to take your mind off of the climb. For this walk, a good head for heights is required as is sure-footedness and a good level of fitness for the climb in the second half of the walk

Did you take any photos of the most exposed areas, where the chains and the narrow footholds are?
Yes, I do have one or two but I can't add them because the number of photos is limited to six. The section with chains isn't above any high exposed area, it's a rocky slope as you reach the bottom of the barranco.
Is it possible to do in reverse so as to do the climbing first?
Hi, you would need to start at Chinamada to do the climbing first.
To be more accurate, from Chinamada, you would start by descending before climbing up to Los Batanes. Once at Cruz del Carmen it would then be downhill
Thank you. I prefer to get the bulk climbing out of the way first!
You're welcome 👍
