Itinerary description
The third day of the Laugavegur abandons the rhyolite mountains and exchanges them for predominantly lava plains reminiscent of a lunar landscape. In the beginning it still goes up and down, but after 3.5 kilometers the rest of the route is mainly flat. The sights on this route are two waterfalls, of which the second is the most impressive. Along the way you will also come across a few huts that can serve as overnight accommodation (if you have reserved in time). Towards the end it can become a bit more difficult because then you walk over loose volcanic sand. Before the descent to Emstrur basecamp you can also turn left to pick up a peak that offers a nice view over the area. Nearby you will also find the fabulous Markarfljót canyon, but unfortunately it is not situated directly on this route.
