Itinerary description
This recording is a straightforward in and out beach hike through loose sand which we used as training for our group’s upcoming Fish River Canyon Hike. The trail starts at the Derdesteen Parking Lot just outside of Bloubergstrand and follows the beach to the Westernmost Point or start of Melkbosstrand returning the same way. This trail is great for weighted backpack training on sand and should ideally be extended if time allows. It could also be done as a beach walk, dogs are allowed if on leads and well behaved. The trail offers great views over Table Bay to Table Mountain, Lions Head and Devils Peak. Variations of the route can be attempted with multiple starting and ending options along the way. This trails turnaround point is the rocky section just after the point (Has a large apartment complex on it) but one could continue onward all the way to the boundary of Koeberg if desired. Being a coastal nature reserve a walk the trail allows for interesting sightings of marine species and marine birdlife like the protected African Oystercatcher. The trail is generally safe and well trafficked especially on weekends and if weather is favorable. With that said a main road follows parallel to the beach so be cautious if its is a quiet day and consider leaving valuables at home.

Very easy casual leg stretch, nothing to strenuous. Beautiful view of Table mountain. There are patches of sharp shells that you walk across so I would make sure you either wear your boots or If you are walking bare foot, keep a pair of flip flops nearby. This walk is for all ages and fitness levels. You can even take your 4 legged friend for an outing, but keep them on a leash as there are unfortunately a few dead seals when we were there.
