Don Manuel a Ventas de Zafarrya

Another route with Kath´s group. The intention was to start at Cruce de Don Manuel and walk to Ventas de Zafarraya, but we had to shorten it because of out need to finish by 1430 hours. For that reason, we went in the coach to a point on the road (waypoint Salida) where we started. We walked a kilometre and a half on a country road, and we had to stop to let cars pass on several occasions. At Zarate we took the road to the left and began our ascent, passing over a river, by a grotto of Saint James, until we entered a huge olive grove. Soon we were climbing through open ground up a difficult area until we arrived at a goat track (Ruta) which lead us to another rural road and into another olive grove. Here we had out sandwich. We continued to walk along the Loma (hillside) de las Monjas, with beautiful view, passing through the tiny village of Las Monjas and then arriving in the bigger village of Espino. We took a road to the left out of the village, and immediately we were on a nice pathway which brought us through the Gap of Zafarrya, and into Ventas. The was one of our nicest hikes of the season. We did 8 km in three hours of walking. Instead of starting where we did, to make the walk longer it can be started in Puente de Don Manuel. A very recommendable route, but with a few areas where care has to be taken. Footwear appropriate for loose surfaces is needed, and the route is not recommended for persons with vertigo.

Otra ruta hecha con el Grupo de Kath. La intención era empezar desde Cruce de Don Manuel a Ventas de Zafarraya, pero tuvimos que acortarla por tener que llegar para comer a las 1430 horas. Así fuimos en el autocar a un punto en la carretera (Salida) donde empezamos. Anduvimos un kilómetro y medio en una carretera comarcal donde tuvimos que parar varias veces para dejar coches pasar. En Zarate, cogimos la carretera a la izquierda y empezamos a subir, pasando por una gruta de Santiago, hasta donde entramos en un olivar. Pronto tenemos que subir en campo abierto por una zona difícil hasta llegar a un camino de cabras (Ruta) que nos lleva a otra carretera rural entre los olivares. Allí comimos el bocadillo. Seguimos por un camino en la Loma de las Monjas, con vistas muy bonitas, pasando por Las Monjas y llegando a Espino. Cogimos un camino a la izquierda saliendo del pueblo, y directamente entramos en una ruta muy bonita que nos lleva al Puerto de Zafarraya. Esta ha sido una de nuestras salidas mas a agradable de la temporada. Hemos hecho unos 8 km en 3 horas de andar. En lugar de empezar donde nosotros hemos empezado, para hacer un camino más largo se puede salir desde Puente de Don Manuel. Una ruta muy recomendable, con algunos puntos donde hay que tener cuidado. Se necesita calzado apropiado para terreno suelto, y no es recomendable para gente con vértigo.
