Itinerary description
A great walk to the refreshing pond below the imposing gorge walls and puente de los alemanes, a concrete bridge spanning the gorge 60 or more meters high. In spring and summer the pond is deep enough and you will need to swim into the gorge but the cool waters beckon if you plan to hike up to the puente and back or go beyond the bridge and onto Cortes de la Frontera. This extension makes for a 15km one way trek and you can always get the train back if you plan it right. In this walk we hiked back and stopped at the pond again as it was 35 degrees warm!
During late spring and summer it is best to avoid the 12pm-5pm zone as the temperature in the closed in valley will soar a few degrees higher and the lack of wind will not help. The pretty train ride from Algeciras to ronda passes by this area but sadly we no longer have the trusty chug of the old diesel which allowed you to enjoy the incredible scenery that is the Sierra de gaucin at a much more leisurely pace than the new more modern and faster train. A pretty walk which, if you’re cut out the hike to the bridge , can be perfect for a family with little ones to go get a swim anytime of the year
PS. If you decide to follow this path, ignore the first 300mtr which we took a wrong turning . Start on tarmac and stay on tarmac until you get to the waterworks, a pretty large building at the end of the road lined with ancient eucalyptus trees.
