Itinerary description
El Contador is a camping/recreation zone high in the pine forest in Arico, which is accessed via a long, narrow and winding, potholed road from the village of Villa de Arico. The area was closed on my last visit after covid and the barbecues were still cordoned off on this visit (2/4/2023), although this may have been a precaution due to the hot weather. Either way, the area was deserted. The walk follows mainly forest tracks and some footpaths and the views throughout are stunning.
Waypoint 2 - path to the summit of Montaña Alvaderos is not immediately obvious but is marked near the beginning with one or two cairns, I have waymarked the turn-off.
Attention needs to be paid to waymark 4. Here, my map showed a footpath leaving the Pista General de Arico forest track and descending to El Contador at this point, thereby reducing the distance of the walk, but after a spending some time searching, I failed to locate it. I did however, locate a narrow pipeline covered by stones just below the forest track and used this as a 'handrail' to descend through the woods to a point further along the Pista General de Arico. Despite there being no real path, following the stones/pipeline proved to be quite simple and reduced the distance along the track. Alternatively, continue along the track should you prefer.
Eventually, as you proceed along the track, a signposted junction is reached with signs to the Casa Forestal. From the casa, the onward path to El Contador is waymarked.
