Itinerary description
This walk starts in the capital of El Hierro, Valverde. The beginning of this hike is very nice, a bit through forest and climbing a hill with good views. The second part of the hike becomes less scenic and is close to one of the main asphalt roads. However, an interesting sight during the second half is the innovative electricity system that makes the island self-sufficient in terms of electricity, using renewable energy from wind and water. The windmills produce energy that is fed into the island’s grid. Surplus energy is used to pump water between two huge reservoirs located at different heights. When there is shortage of wind, the water stored in the upper reservoir is sent down to the hydroelectric plant to generate electricity. I would rate the first part of this hike with 4 stars, while the second part due to all the asphalt gets only 2 stars…So an average 3 star hike, if you have limited time I would choose another one!
