Itinerary description
This walk starts at the Refugio de Juanar, situated at 825 m., that you can reach by following the MA - 5300 that comes from the A - 355 from Marbella to Monda.
This is a beautiful starting point for short walks and longer ones. The shortest and easiest one leads you to two beautiful Miradors, the Mirador del Corzo and the Mirador del Puerto Marbella.
We followed the footpath indicated by signposts to the Miradors and after visiting them we walked on towards the Puerto de la Viborilla.
After returning from the Puerto Marbella and ignoring the track to the Cruz de Juanar (1164 m.) we followed the track of the Gr 243.1 to Istán.
The first part of this track goes through the Olivar de Juanar, an olive tree orchard, and after this the track leads you to the Puerto de la Viborilla (1000m.), a wonderful winding climb with at least 12 hairpins.
Arriving at this pass (Puerto) you will have a wonderful view of the lenght of the Viborilla and into the next valleys. To the west towards Istán and to the north towards the Parque Natural Sierra de las Nieves.
At this point you could also go to the right, going for a shorter walk but we chose to follow the track towards Istán for a while. Beacuse the going was a bit slow as the path is not a level one and you have to slide down some huge boulders we only followed this path for some 400 metres and then took a small track to the right that would take us to what according to our map would be a wider track back towards the Viborilla.
The track proved to be not wider at all and quite invisible most of the time as it was completely overgrown by low bushes and that meant slow walking again, this time going up. The advantage of it all was that we had a great time watching this valley and the countryside beyond it.
Finally, getting to the other end of La Viborilla, we could join the track coming from where we arrived at the col and after goin up on this very white and sandy track we stopped to rest for a while at the point where this track connects with another famous one; the Ruta de El Pozuelo.
From that point you have a wonderful view toward the Sierra de Mijas and also towards Fuengirola and the coast.
From our resting place it was slightly less than 1.5 kilometres to the Refugio El Juanar.

July 2021: Be advised that part of the path is impassable. Find another route :)
This no longer exists after the half way route.
Oh surprise! Le chemin n’est plus accessible aux environs de 7 kms. Nous avons contourné la colline par la droite via le chemin de montagne. Belle aventure quand même!
