Itinerary description
Despite being a fairly short walk with barely 300 metres of ascent, and much of the route being on tarmac, I have graded the walk as very difficult. This relates to the almost total absence of a clear path for much of the climb and descent. Another factor is the terrain, which is extremely steep and crosses very rough ground with much loose earth and stones to contend with. The steepness of the ground climbing up to the caldera rim caused me to climb on all fours on numerous occasions. Despite the lack of a clear path, there are a number of cairns on both the ascent and descent and I have waymarked the most prominent of these. This walk is only suitable for walkers who are confident in finding their way without an obvious path on very rough terrain. I would not recommend doing the walk at weekends, particularly Sunday's, because of the amount of traffic on the road back to Boca de Tauce. Having said all of this, the views throughout are stunning, particularly from the summit of El Sombrerito.
