Itinerary description
If you want to attempt this walk, be forewarned. Read the comment/review of Brian Hooper of this walk (23-01-2024).
Coming from Los Barrios on the A - 381, we took exit 80 and took the road to the shooting range of Las Majadillas
We parked our car next to the shooting range at a few hundred metres from the entrance gate to the nature reserve Los Alcornocales.
The fisrt part of this walk is along a wide track through the characteristic scenery of this park. It is almost nowhere much higher than 200 meters and when you are at that height you will see undulating countryside with limestone rocks and beautiful almost pastoral views on grazing cattle, reservoirs, corkoaks (‘alcornocales’) a lot of shrubbery and many broad and small tracks that you will see on no map.
Arriving at the first house you will see bizarre formed rock formations, and also a cave that overlooks the Embalse de Charco Redondo. After these rockformations at 150m. high we followed a narrow track eastwards that takes you to a height of 200 metres passing again some wonderful anthropomorphic rock formations.
After that we continued following the small track tot he north for slightly more than 1 kilometre, having to cross a fence and after that descended through the corkoaks and shrubbery to a meadow with grazing cattle at 125 metres where we crossed a little stream to get to a three forked crossroads with two big fences.
We took the track in the north-western direction, already having a beautiful view of the reservoir. After 600 metres on this track we took a smaller track to the west that takes you to a height of 125 metres. In the wooded part of this path we looked for possiblitities to go south-west to get to the most southern branches of the reservoir.
This path proved to be a more often used one and led us in a curve to the reservoir. From here on it depends on the level of the water how far you have to follow the narrow track to get to the other side of the water but the view is beautiful.
Having got around the water we started to follow a track south east again for more or less 800 metres, having great views all the time of the reservoir and then followed a narrow track going up again to 160 metres that took us to a broad track that goes around that branch of the reservoir.
Getting to a house we took the wide track going down and almost at the end of the water took a small track again going down tot he water that crossed the water via stepping stones.
Reaching a narrow track again at 100 metres we followed this along the reservoir and later veered away from it in a south-eastern direction, twice having to cross a fence. After the last fence you are very close to the wide track of the starting point.
This is a beautiful walk that sometimes forces you to go rather slowly but the surroundings are so beautiful that you would’nt even want to go faster.

This walk was attempted by an experienced group and found to be impassable in the hill side tracks. Since 2016 there has been such growth that tracks are no longer assessable. This particularly applied from km 6.62 where there's no way
Cont from above: there is now way west to the waterside. The landowner confirmed this to us. Route back was therefore SSE and around to start. Recommend that this route be ignored or deleted. Have to say that back in 2016, it must have been enjoyable!
Thanks for your reaction. I have put a warning at the beginning of my description of the walk. When we did this there were already parts of tracks overgrown or difficult to follow and in 6 years off the beaten tracks can be totally different. That is why I always carry pruning shears on my walks 😉
