Itinerary description
This is a part of the Tongariro Crossing trail.
The trail starts at Mangatepopo parking and continues up the valley. On the right side you have beautiful views of the Ngauruhoe volcano. The trail until the South Crater is very comfortable.
Up from the South Crater it becomes slippery (you have to walk on a mix of sand and stones).
Beautiful vistas open when you reach the Red Crater. From there you can walk until the top of the Tongariro volcano, or continue along the Tongariro Crossing, passing through the Emerald Lakes.
