UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE) - Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) - From Dhanab, in the Wadi Qada'ah (Arabic: وادي قداعة), to the village of Qada'ah/Kida'ah and return

INTRODUCTION:

The Wādī Qada'ah is a dry valley or river, with intermittent flow, which flows from southeast to northwest, almost exclusively during the rainy season, located northeast of the United Arab Emirates, in the Emirate of Ras al Khaimah. It is an important tributary, on the left, of the Wadi al Bih - وادي البيح.

Wadi Qada'ah has been identified with several different spellings: Wadi Kida'ah, Wādī Kidā'ah, Wadi Qida'a, Wadi Qada`a, Wadi Qada`ah, Wadi Qadda`a, Wādī Qada'a, Wādī Qada'ah, Wādī Qadda'a, Wadi Quda'ah..... although the most commonly used is Wadi Qada'ah .

In The national atlas of the United Arab Emirates , Wadi Qada'ah is identified as Wādī Kidā'ah .

From the source of its main stream (the one that provides the greatest water flow, greatest length or greatest drainage area) on the northern slope of Jabal Tafif, in the Sultanate of Oman, to its mouth in the Wadi al Bih, a few meters later From the Wadi Qada'ah Dam, the Wadi Qada'ah runs a course of 15.3 km, in a southeast to northwest direction, receiving the waters of numerous torrents, ravines and tributary wadis.

Image taken with Google Earth, showing the first kilometer of the Wadi Qada'ah, from its source in Oman, on the northern slope of Jabal Tafif (1598 m). After traveling the first 800 m. It falls in a cascade down the western slope of the mountain, to continue its course in the territory of the UAE

Similar image, in two dimensions and without using a marker

In its upper course, already in UAE territory, the Wadi Qada'ah surrounds to the east and north, the village of Qada'ah / Kida'ah , located on a small plateau, at an approximate altitude of 870 m asl, following its trajectory counterclockwise, and forming multiple small and large dry waterfalls, among which the Az Zahar Dry Falls (northwest of the old village of Az Zahar), and the Hanging Gardens Dry Falls stand out, in a sector of the climbing area popularly known as Leopard Canyon .

Regarding this name, imposed for commercial purposes by one of the companies promoting outdoor activities in Dubai, I would like to clarify that the wadi that forms this canyon is not called Nimr, as said company claims and as some hikers believe. Nimr is the scientific name given in 1833 to the Arabian leopard: Felis pardus nimr or Panthera pardus nimr ), and that name has nothing to do with geography. That canyon is simply a sector of the upper course of the Wadi Qada'ah.

And I also take this opportunity to comment that the famous leopard, which was supposedly found dead there, and inspired the popular name of the canyon, was one of the last of its species killed in the UAE, between 1992 and 1994 , and by the way, it was not found in that place, but 1.5 km away. away to the northeast, in a very difficult sector of the Wadi Zibat - وادي زيبات (which some also call Wadi Razor), only suitable for climbing and canyoning activities (Rock Climbing, Canyoneering or Alpine Climbing) in no case for hiking .

For its part, the village of Qada'ah / Kida'ah is located approximately at coordinates 25.750444, 56.146469 , in a formidable watchtower from which it dominates, to the west, a good part of the middle and lower course of the Wadi Qada'ah and even the coast of the Persian Gulf; to the north, the southern slope of Jabal Al Ahqab (Jabal Qada'ah); and to the east some sectors of the upper course of the Wadi Qada'ah and the cliffs and mountain ridge that serve as a reference for the border limit with the Sultanate of Oman.

Qada'ah/Kida'ah village. Good 360º views. View towards the west. Much of the middle and lower reaches of the Wadi Qada'ah and even the coast of the Persian Gulf

In historical maps prior to the independence of the UAE, such as the one attached, and in geographical databases, the toponym Qada'ah was used to refer to a generic farming area (not a village) located on the banks of the wadi, in the same place that was also mistakenly called Sal, and whose real name, according to its inhabitants and according to The national atlas of the United Arab Emirates, is Mak Sikek .

On the maps prepared between 1986 and 1991 by the Military Survey, Abu Dhabi, which were used in 1993 for the publication of the aforementioned Atlas, the village of Qada'ah was correctly located at the coordinates indicated above, appearing with the name of Kidā' ah , which is the one that most closely resembles the pronunciation used by its native inhabitants.

The entire area near the village of Qada'ah corresponded to the Habus tribal area of Banī Huraymish .

THE ROUTE:

Tour from the village of Dhanab, on the banks of Wadi Qada'ah, to the village of Qada'ah, and return along the same path.

It is a beautiful and very interesting itinerary, which is not at all easy, as some claim.

Although the distance and the slope require only a moderate effort, the main difficulty of this route is its steep slope, partially staggered, with sections in which there is a lot of loose small stone, which requires each step to be well secured, both on the way up and down. on the way down, since a simple slip, or a trip, can cause a fall and a serious accident.

Steep climb. There are some concrete steps, but most of the trail is dirt and natural rock. Very steep and with a lot of loose stone

In some segments it is necessary to use hands and feet, and the final part of the route, shortly before reaching Qada'ah, is unmarked and the path is not well defined.

There are some sections of slight exposure to danger, although they are short, the platform of the path is quite wide, and there are natural support points in them.

The route is designed for use as a bridle path, although seeing the difficulty of some steps, one cannot help but wonder how many donkeys have died in accidents on this type of path.

At the beginning of the route, the path ascends almost vertically, along the right side of one of the tributary arms of the Wadi Qada'ah, which in that place forms an impressive dry waterfall of about 50 m. Tall. Currently, this section is well stepped, with stone steps set with concrete, which makes walking much easier and contributes to making the route safer.

Qada'ah Dry Falls. Spectacular dry waterfall that forms one of the arms of Wadi Qada'ah

However, as we continue climbing, the concrete stone steps become increasingly scarce, and most of the sections are built with natural stone, taking advantage of the rock projections, accompanied by a zigzag dirt path.

At the top of the itinerary, it is worth taking a tour of the village of Qada'ah. It is difficult to find any of its occasional inhabitants (I have not seen permanent residents), but even if we did come across some, I can assure you that they are very friendly and hospitable people, who would in no way be bothered by our presence.

Like most large historic villages, Qada'ah still preserves many ruins of old dry stone constructions: houses with earthen roofs, cisterns, canals to collect runoff (in Arabic called aflaj, which is the plural of falaj ), sheepfolds, terraces, cemeteries, etc., but there are also new constructions that respect the traditional style, and that are used by their owners occasionally. They are like a kind of second residence in the mountains, in the land of their ancestors, for which they feel a great attachment.

The village is divided into two areas, crossed by a small ravine that is easy to navigate, and the northeastern part offers beautiful views towards a section of the upper reaches of the Wadi Qada'ah, which features one of its spectacular dry waterfalls.

Views towards the east, from the village of Qada'ah / Kida'ah. A small area of terraces and a segment of the upper course of the Wadi Qada'ah, which along its path, from its source in the neighboring Sultanate of Oman, forms several picturesque dry waterfalls

It is a route to travel slowly, without rushing, carefully securing each step and enjoying its privileged surroundings and views.

ACCESS TO THE ITINERARY AND PARKING:

To reach the starting point of the route, you must take a dirt track of almost 8 km, which starts from the Wadi Qada'ah Dam.

The ideal is to travel this track with a 4x4 vehicle, although currently, with some difficulty and very slowly, a sedan vehicle (that is not a too low model) can also travel. However, it must be kept in mind that at any time, a slightly heavy torrential rain can wreak havoc on the track, making it impassable.

A few meters before the start of the itinerary, at the coordinate point 25.757451, 56.127913 , there is a good parking space.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL OF THIS ROUTE:

The degree of difficulty of a route is measured mainly based on three factors: effort, technicality and risk , although the real difficulty of an itinerary must also take into account other variables, such as the weather situation, the weight of the backpack and the preparation. or physical form of the walker, who must know how to evaluate himself.

To know the physical difficulty or physical effort required, it is useful to use an automatic assessment system, such as the one provided by the PPI index. This is the index that corresponds to this route:

IBP index: 73 HKG
Total distance: 6.79 km
