UNITED STATES - NEW YORK - Circular - From Bear Mountain to Anthony 'Nose, along the Bear Mountain Bridge, following a stretch of the Appalachian Trail and the Camp Smith Trail

Nice circular hike starting at the foot of the Bear Mountain , next to Hessian Lake, west of the Hudson River, in Rockland County, New York.

Start of the circular route. At the foot of Bear Mountain

The first part of the itinerary follows the route of the Appalachian Trail (Appalachian Trail) in a northerly direction, and crosses the Hudson by the Bear Mountain Bridge. This complete section of the Appalachian, traveled in winter, can be seen in the following link.

Bear Mountain Bridge and views from the bridge

Already on the east bank of the Hudson, and after following the NY 9D road for 400 meters, the path turns to the right and begins the ascent of a scarce kilometer, along the rocky slope and with a fairly steep slope of the Anthony 'Nose , until you find the Camp Smith Trail , marked in blue, which heads towards Manitou Mountain, passing the top of Anthony 'Nose (270 m).

Steep and rocky climb up the slope of Anthony's Nose

Anthony 'Nose, along with Dunderberg Mountain (located west of the river), form what is known as the South Gate of the Hudson Highlands. Although the mountain has low elevation, the views from its top are spectacular, especially on a sunny and clear day like today, with a magnificent view of Bear Mountain, Bear Mountain - Harriman State Park, Hudson River, Iona Island, and bridges Popolopen Bridge and Bear Mountain Bridge.

From this popular watchtower (sometimes very busy), we continue the itinerary to the southeast, through the Camp Smith Trail, with several more areas of clear rock, which also offer very good views.

The descent down this path, to a parking lot that is located on US 6 / US 202, also known as Bear Mountain Bridge Road, is less steep and steep than the climb up the AT, which also makes it more frequented by Hikers

Already on the road, past the small Broccy Creek, the itinerary follows the least pleasant part of the day, having to walk for 2 km. by its paved road, with quite intense traffic, to the Bear Mountain Bridge. An alternative to avoid that stretch of road would be to continue the Camp Smith Trail for almost 3 km. more, following the skirt of Manitou Mountain, to another parking lot located on the same route, at one end of this path, but in that case, the route would no longer be circular, and would require a second car or use a shuttle, taxi or similar, to return to the beginning.

Arriving at the Bear Mountain Bridge, we choose to follow the north pedestrian walkway, to also enjoy the great views of this side of the river, then continue to the Hessian Lake, which looks spectacular with the fall colors on this sunny afternoon, and we conclude the itinerary at the same starting point, next to the Bear Mountain Inn.

The CoachUSA bus stops there, which makes the journey from New York.
