Itinerary description
Arrive at the town of Espot and follow the signs to the Park. At the entrance there is a parking area where you must leave the car necessarily. It is a route very easy to follow if you start from the car park. The soil is soft and almost all the time you go in shadow. With normal step you reach the Estany of San Maurici (“estany” means pond) in an hour. From there we continued to the right, towards the Estany of Ratera. Halfway is Ratera waterfall. During the defrost the waterfall can be very impressive. We did the route on May 12th 2013, a year with plenty of snow. Estany de San Maurici had a part still covered with ice and the access to Estany de Ratera was covered with snow. A very evocative and rewarding site. We had a big perfect blue sky and no one around. An inspirational place. Do not rely on weather in the parking area. The ponds can be quite cold and windy.
