Itinerary description
The Esva Gorges Trail is a varied route located between Lluarca and Tineo in West-Asturias. Since it's a combination of the routes PR AS-1 and PR AS-2, there are varying distances and starting points. The full route has a sort of 8-shape. We decided to only hike the 'lowest' circular route (11 km).
Starting at the parking in Ese de Calleras, we first hiked along the Esva river with very pretty sights on the streaming water and surrounding autumn-colored forest. A large part led over wooden decks and stairs. This part of the route is not suitable for people with fear of heights! Moreover, the wood was quite wet and slippery and in some places very poorly maintained; boards were loose or disappeared! The second part of the route led over the bordering mountain top, requiring quite some steep climbing but with beautiful views over the gorge and surrounding mountains. Put on long trousers because the gorse growing along the small path has nasty thorns. In summary, a great route because of the diversity in landscapes, tranquility and adventure, but not so well-maintained.
