First day of the Trekking of the 3 steps Everest:
November 17, 2019:
1st Stage - Lukla Heliport (2,860 m) to Tok Tok (2,650 m)
Lukla is a small town in eastern Nepal, located in the Khumbu region and with an altitude of 2,860 m. All the trekkings that enter the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park begin here. Lukla's name means "Place with many goats" but we did not see many or few; they would be by the mount.
To get to Lukla there is no road. The only means of transport is the plane or the helicopter. You also have the possibility to walk from Jiri , as Hillary and Norgay did in 1953 when they made the first ascent of Everest, but you have to calculate another 6-7 days. Come on, a beating.
Technical data :
• Route Stage 1: Lukla - TokTok.
• Distance: 10 km. Approx.
• Difficulty: Easy.
• Time in motion: 3 h.
• Total time with stops: 4h 30m.
• Type of road surface: Wide dirt road.
• Ascent slope: 380 m. approx (Actual value).
• Descent slope: 430 m. approx (Actual value).
• Minimum height: 2,552 m. (Ghat).
• Maximum height: 2,860 m. (Lukla).
• Signage: Easy.
Description of the route:
Upon landing in Lukla , we collected the bags and bags from the helicopter, and our guide Amar Magar took us to the Khumbu Lodge .
The here called "Tea House", are houses equipped to offer accommodation and meals.
Amar Magar introduced us to the Sherpas Balkrishna Magar and Kalu Magar , who would help us throughout the tour by taking the bags of material and sharing with us the day to day. They are great people.
After the presentations, we enjoy a typical meal of this area which are the "Momos" , a type of dumplings filled with chicken meat or vegetables, super rich. The truth is that we loved the food throughout the tour.
When we finished we set off quickly, as we had to get to the Lodge before dark. We were also like crazy to start enjoying the tour.
We pass through the Lukla municipal control of access to the park, where they ask for your passports, and through the first Stupa of the many that we would see on the way.
We crossed under the arch with the image of Hillary, and we followed the path almost continuously downward.
In the distance the Kongde Ri (6,187 m) . We will see this mountain better from the other side when we get to Namche.
We passed through the village of Chheplung with its Stupa at the entrance, and the prayer wheels.
These wheels are cylinders of different sizes and materials, mounted on their axles, with inscriptions of the mantra "Om mani padme hum" . As the Tibetan Buddhist tradition says, we turned the wheels clockwise, which is the same as reciting the prayers for luck.
Later two Buddhist monasteries. The oldest one located in the cliffs of the mountain, and the new one on the same road.
We continue and 1 kilometer we reach the suspension bridge that crosses the Thadokosi river . As it was the first one we were going to cross, we were very excited. In addition, seeing it adorned with the colors that the prayer flags give it, it is very beautiful and cheerful.
Up on our right, the Kusum Kangkharu peak (6,367 m) , impresses with the 3,500 m of unevenness that separates us from it.
It is very common to come across mule caravans, or a mixture of yak and cow, transporting cargo between the villages of the valley to Namche . On some occasion we find them in the middle of a suspension bridge, and we have had to run a little because if they pass we have to go back.
We continue our way through the village of Nurning Ghat with its painted Mani Stones (stone slabs stacked and engraved with prayers) , its prayer wheels, and the iron bridge that crosses the Thado Koshi Khola river . Almost stuck, is the Chhuthawa village, also with its Mani Stones and Stupa.
Throughout the tour, as you pass through the villages you will find small shops that sell soft drinks and a variety of foods.
Later, parallel to the river Dudh Khosi (River of milk) we arrive at Phakding . For me, one of the most beautiful towns of the entire route. It is located on both sides of the river and linked by a beautiful suspension bridge.
When you cross it, it is impressive to see the force that the river carries.
Phakding is usually the place chosen by the guides to end the first stage. We continue 2 km later, we pass the village of Zamphuti and we stop at a Lodge leaving Tok Tok .
We left our things in the room, and went to the living room to have dinner by the heat of the stove. Dinner I think I remember was very rich spaghetti.
The problem every day is when it comes time to turn off the stove in the dining room, which is usually around 8:00 p.m., and all the staff have to go to their rooms. That first day, I remember it well because it was quite cold, and as it was near the river there was a lot of humidity. Luckily, we were carrying down sacks.
Although it is too early to go to bed, as we had gotten up early to catch the helicopter in Kathmandu, we were very tired and it did not take us long to get fried.
It was time to dream of the next day, which was the passage through several suspension bridges, including Hillary's, which is impressive. And the arrival in the beautiful town of Namche Bazar that I had read and heard so much about.
Stage summary:
Spectacular helicopter ride from Kathmandu to Lukla.
Beautiful route, between pine forests, crossing small villages with their Stupas, prayer wheels, their monasteries, and crossing the first hanging bridges of the Trekking.
We have loved the food and I have no words about the Sherpas. We have so much to learn from them.
An unforgettable day.
