Stage 10 of the Trekking of the Three Steps of Everest

November 26, 2019.

Stage 10 - Gorak Shep - Lobuche - Memorial - Dzonglha

The beginning of this stage was the climb to Kala Patthar , but it was rejected because it was cloudy and Everest was not seen. We move away from these great peaks, to approach another of the eight thousand, the Cho Oyu through the Cho La pass .
We will pass Lobuche and we will deviate a few meters to visit the Everest Memorial where homage is paid to all those who have left their lives in the attempt to tread the highest peaks of the Himalayas.
We will sleep in Dzonglha to attack in the next stage, the climb to Cho La Pass and cross the longest glacier in the Himalayas the Ngozumpa .

Technical data :

• Distance: 13 km.
• Difficulty: Easy.
• Time in movement: 3h, 50m.
• Total time with stops: 4h, 30m.
• Type of road surface: Track and Path.
• Ascent slope: 390 m. ( Real value )
• Descent slope: 620 m. ( Real value )
• Minimum height: 4,720 m. (Bridge near Dzonglha).
• Maximum height: 5,195 m. (Upper Gorak Shep).
• Signposting: Very marked.

Description of the route:

We had planned to wake up at 4:30, but Amar and Krishna decided not to because they saw that the sky was covered with clouds. You wouldn't see anything from Kala Patthar .
Although we missed the impressive views at 5,650 m of Everest, it was good for us to sleep a few hours more, and recharge for the tough stages that we had left.
After a good breakfast, we set off.
We return by the same way out from Lobuche .

We crossed the Changri Shar Glacier .

We reached the High Pass and the Peter Legate Mountaineer Memorial.
The 38-year-old British mountaineer lost his life on April 30, 2002 when he slipped near Camp 3, on the south face of Lhotse, climbing Everest . The objective of this escalation was to deliver the funds from the sponsors to a foundation for deaf children and another for orphans. A disgrace. The mountain does not make exceptions between one and the other. D.E.P

We pass Lobuche and follow the track parallel to the Khumbu Glacier .

We could see on the other side of the glacier, the Pokalde peak, and on the left the Kongma La Pass , the impressive first pass through which we crossed two days ago.

We deviate a few meters from the road towards Thukla , to visit the Everest Memorial .

It is located on a plain with impressive views.

It is a very special place for me, of admiration and respect for all those who lost their lives trying to fulfill their dream of climbing the highest peaks on earth.
Many of those named in the Stone Chortens were great climbers who made history in the mountaineering world.

Scott Fischer was an excellent mountaineer, and a mountain guide for his adventure travel company Mountain Madness . His goal, to get his clients to step on the top of the highest mountains in the world. During the 1996 expedition, Fisher would star in one of the most tragic pages in Himalayan history. A terrible unanticipated storm surprised more than 20 climbers in the middle of the climb. That spring 15 people lost their lives, including Scott. Nearby is that of his friend Rob Hall , a guide for the other mountain group who also lost his life that fateful day near the summit, on the Hillary Step . The movie Everest tries to reflect what happened that month of May 1996.

Mario Merelli , was one of the best Italian mountaineers. He lost his life on January 18, 2012 at age 49 in Pico Redorta (Italian Alps). He climbed 10 of the 14 eight thousand, and Everest twice. He was a very loved person among mountaineers around the world. He stood out above the rest, for his way of prioritizing the values of friendship and solidarity in the mountains. A plaque was placed on the Everest Memorial, because the Himalayas were his second home.

Babu Chiri Sherpa was one of the best Sherpa mountaineers. He was 35 years old when he slipped taking some photos on Camp 2 going up to Everest . He was an accomplished mountaineer, climbing Everest 10 times. He holds the record for the fastest ascent to Everest in 15h, 56m, and the record for staying at the top for 21 hours. In addition to Everest, he also ascended Kangchenjunga (8,586 m.) , Shisha Pangma (8,013 m.) Twice, and Cho Oyu (8,201 m.) Six times. His dream was to build schools in Nepal, to give the children of all the villages a better future.

Then we passed by Anatoli Nikolayevich Bukréyev , one of the best mountaineers of all time, who in 1997 unfortunately died in an avalanche on Annapurna . We walked through much of the Stone Chortens and came back the same way we had come, turning left by a shortcut, crossing the stream basin until we hit the main road to Dzonglha .

This path goes to the middle of the slope surrounding the mountain until we reach our destination.
The scenery as we progressed was impressive.

The Everest Memorial on the other side.

Panoramic following the course of the Lobuche river, with the town of Pheriche and Ama Dablam in the background.

Cholatse peak with the lake of the same name at its feet.

The Cholo Glacier between the Taboche and Cholatse peaks.

We can already see the 4 houses that make up the village of Dzonglha , and behind the Cho La Pass , our objective for the next day.

When we got to the village, we took some photos and went straight to eat.
The rest of the day is spent resting, taking photos, reading and preparing the happy 4 liters of water every day.

A hard day awaited us: The Cho La pass at 5,420 m , and the crossing of the Ngozumpa Glacier (the longest in the Himalayas) to reach our final goal Gokyo .

But that, we already tell in the next stage.

Continue Stage 11 - Dzonglha - Cho La Pass (5,420 m) - Ngozumpa Glacier - Gokyo

Back to Stage 10 - Part 2 - Gorak Shep (5,165 m) - Everest Base Camp (EBC - 5,364 m)
