Stage 12 - Gokyo - Lake Donag Tsho - Approach to Cho Oyu Base Camp - Ngozumpa Glacier - Gokyo
This stage is the approach to the Cho Oyu Base Camp (8,201 m) located in the 6th Lake, although we only reached the fourth because there were many clouds that covered the main peaks, and nothing was going to be seen.
The best part of the tour was seeing the spectacular Ngozumpa Glacier up close .
Technical data :
• Distance: 5 km.
• Difficulty: Easy
• Total time with stops: 2h.
• Type of road surface: Path and dirt road.
• Ascent slope: 252 m. ( Real value )
• Descent slope: 245 m. ( Real value )
• Minimum height: 4,760 m. (Gokyo Lake).
• Maximum height: 4,875 m. (Glacier Viewpoint and Cho Oyu).
• Signposting: Road marked to CB Cho Oyu.
Description of the route:
I have little to say about this stage, as it was a little walk that came in handy to regain strength after the hard stage of Cho La Pass .
Besides, the weather wasn't very good either. There were many clouds, and it was quite cool.
We took advantage of it to get a little closer to the Cho Oyu Base Camp .
On the way we pass by Reinhard Karl's Chortens, in homage to his career as a mountaineer, writer of epic climbs, and good photographer.
From here you have great views of Cho Oyu, but the clouds hid it.
On May 11, 1978, he was the first German to reach the top of Mount Everest, together with his compatriot Oswald Oelz. They joined the expedition of Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler who climbed it for the first time without additional oxygen.
Reinhard Karl was killed on May 19, 1982 by an avalanche at Cho Oyu when he was in Camp 2. DIP.
The road is very marked, and it runs parallel to the Ngozumpa Glacier that reaches the base of Cho Oyu .
We reached Lake Donag Tsho which is the fourth lake on the way to Base Camp.
A little further on, we had amazing views of the glacier.
We took some photos with our friends Amar and Krishna .
Cho Oyu means "Turquoise Goddess" in Tibetan.
The goddess was rarely seen, as she was hidden in the clouds.
It is the sixth highest peak on earth at 8,201 m, and it is the one with the least difficulties to ascend, of the 14 eight thousand.
To the left is the Nangpa La Ice Pass (5,730 m) , the traditional trade route between Tibet and the Khumbu Sherpas. It was also one of the steps the Tibetans used to flee the Chinese army, in November 1950.
We decided not to continue until the Base Camp that is in the 6th Lake, because the whole rope was with clouds and we would not see anything. We almost preferred to save our strength for the next stage.
Our friend Alejandro, in order not to lose his form, if he approached the same base camp, but he could not see the clear peak either.
We return the same way.
When we got to Gokyo, we spent the rest of the day resting, and reading a bit.
In the afternoon, like every day before dinner, we take out our 150-gram blister of Iberian ham. We were the envy of the whole room. Our friends the Sherpas loved it when it was time for the aperitif.
Around 8:30 p.m. they turned off the stove in the living room. It was time to go to our rooms to sleep.
The next day it was time to get up early (5:00) to climb Gokyo Ri at 5,360 m. which has stunning views of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu , but it all depends on whether it is clear. Then, cross the third pass of the Renjo La Pass at the same height of 5,360 m.
Although in the end due to different circumstances, we decided not to go through, and go straight down this slope to Machermo on the way to Namche.
But this I tell in the next stage.

Gracias compis

Tan cerca del Cho Oyu.
