Fifth Stage of the Trekking of the 3 Steps of Everest.
November 21, 2019.
Stage 5 - Tengboche (3,867 m) - Dingboche (4,350)
Today we have the stage between Tengboche and Dingboche , following the course of the Imja Khola River. We will cross a rhododendron forest and we will pass a steppe landscape, with very little vegetation. We will get closer to the great colossi of the Himalayas.
Technical data :
• Distance: 11 km.
• Difficulty: Easy-Moderate, although the height is noticeable.
• Time in motion: 4.40 h.
• Total time with stops: 6 h (Including food at Shomare).
• Type of road surface: dirt road.
• Ascent slope: 700 m. ( Real value ).
• Descent slope: 262 m. ( Real value ).
• Minimum height: 3,870 m. (Tengboche).
• Maximum height: 4,350 m. (Dingboche).
• Signage: Easy.
Description of the route:
We woke up early as every day, we prepare the backpacks with the 3-4 liters of water that we drink the day before with the practical lamps. After having a good Tibetan breakfast, we set off. Luck is still with us, the day is great again. The route begins at a good pace, the sight of the first rays of the sun illuminating the highest peaks motivates anyone.
The first section is down to Deboche . We crossed a beautiful forest of giant rhododendrons. Along the way we find a multitude of herds of yaks, some of them imposing.
We leave the small villages of Deboche and Millingo behind and reach the suspension bridge that will take us to the other side of the Imja Khola river. Here the riverbed narrows.
Each day that passes we are noticing the height more, the effort is more pronounced than the previous day. We noticed minor discomfort in the head, but nothing major.
The landscape changes drastically, going from lush forests to the almost complete absence of vegetation. We continue our way in a slight ascent until we reach the town of Pangboche , which is located on the skirt of the beautiful Ama Dablam .
Pangboche , due to its location on the way to Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Island Peak and other peaks, has become an important population in this area of the Himalayas for mountaineers. The town is inhabited mainly by Sherpas. They tell us that in their monastery they kept the supposed skin and a hand of the yeti, until it mysteriously disappeared.
One of its illustrious neighbors is Sungdare Sherpa , who held the world record in 1989 for having climbed Everest five times.
The Pangboche school was built by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1963 for the development of the Sherpa people.
At the exit of the town we have a path to the right, it goes to the Ama Dablam Base Camp , it is about 4,600 m. From where we are at about 3,950 m. to Base Camp, there are about 600 meters of elevation gain.
Situation of the different fields from height to the top.
It is a fairly exposed climb on the ridge and the last very vertical section.
About 2 km away we stopped in the village of Shomare where we ate very well. After a good rest, we resume the march passing through 3 small villages (2 houses) of Chejungm, Orsho and Tsuro .
We leave the path that goes to Pheriche to the left and reaches CB Everest , and we cross the bridge in the direction of Dingboche .
At the entrance there is a Stupa and above it a very marked path that goes up the rope to the Nangkartstang peak (5,073 m) . We will go up there the next day as the second day of acclimatization of the trek.
Everyone who goes directly to CBEverest usually spends 2 days here for the second acclimatization. So do we, although we continue to Chukhung .
Upon arriving at the Lodge, we found large mounds of yak and cow excrement on the way, which they use as fuel. They are collected from fields and roads, crushed and placed in the sun to dry.
At the lodge we stayed in, we met Alejandro from Zaragoza who has been traveling Asia for almost 1 year. What envy.
After completing the Anapurnas, I was in this part of the Himalayas doing the same route as us of the Three Steps of Everest. He tells us that the day before he went up to Ama Dablam's CB from Pangboche where he found several tents installed, and saw groups climbing. Until the return to Lukla we met him for several days. A great kid.
We stayed here for 2 nights for the second acclimatization. Very important to avoid problems with altitude sickness.
The first night the group from India were in high spirits.

Namaste Richard Sherpa.
