Seventh Stage (1st Part) of the Trekking of the 3 Steps of Everest.
November 23, 2019.
Stage 7 - 1st Part - Dingboche (4,350 m) - Chukhung (4,730 m).
This first part of the stage is the journey between the villages of Dingboche and Chukhung . It has no difficulty and is to follow the path parallel to the Imja Chola river .
It is a stage for the enjoyment of the senses, although considering that we were at 4,300 m and we were climbing up to 4,730 m; we should have gone slowly.
Technical data :
• Distance: 5.2 km.
• Difficulty: Easy.
• Time in movement: 2h.
• Total time with stops: 2h, 45m.
• Type of road surface: dirt path.
• Ascent slope: 410 m.
• Downhill slope: 15 m.
• Minimum height: 4,350 m. (Dingboche).
• Maximum height: 4,730 m. (Chukhung).
• Signage: Easy.
Description of the route:
We get up early as usual, to take advantage of the daylight hours.
The nights in the rooms are already beginning to be "cooler", a prelude to those that we would spend below zero at a higher altitude. We hurried to get dressed and prepare our bags, to go to the living room in the warmth of the stove.
After a good breakfast we set off.
We follow the path of the previous day towards the upper area of Dingboche , and at the crossroads we turn right towards Chukhung .
The route does not have any technical difficulties. Comfortable path and progressive unevenness.
Krishna, one of our guides, continually reminded us to go slowly to acclimatise properly. Very important before the tough climb to the 5,535m Kongma La Pass .
We advanced with the view of Ama Dablam to our right, always fascinating from any angle.
We pass a small stone house, nearby is a memorial to three great Polish mountaineers who lost their lives climbing Lhotse on its south face. The last one, one of my idols, Jerzy Kukuczka (Jurek) , possibly the best mountaineer of all time.
I have several books in the Jurek library, such as "My vertical world" or "Climbers of freedom" . He managed to be the second to climb the fourteen eight thousand after Reinhold Messner . A second-hand rope in poor condition bought in Kathmandu cost him his life by breaking when he climbed the south face of Lhotse at 8,200 m. He was buried by his friends, in one of the crevices of the Lhotse glacier, as he would have liked.
A month before arriving, we, family and friends of Jurek placed a commemorative plaque for 30 years.
A group of Yaks meet us on the way down. The white ones seem impressive to me.
We continue on our way until we reach our goal this morning, the small village of Chukhung .
It really only has 4 houses that are operational in spring and fall which is when we come. It is surrounded by Nuptse, Lhotse, Hillary Peak, Shartse, Island Peak, Baruntse, Ama Dablam….
Chukhung is located at the northern end of the valley, where mountaineers come to acclimatize, as well as being the step for one of the most popular climbs, the ascent of Island Peak .
We went directly to the Sunrise Lodge Eco Resort , where we will spend the night. We leave our backpacks in our rooms, this time without a bathroom, and go upstairs to eat in the living room, which is located on the upper floor. From the windows the views are not wasted, surrounded by these impressive walls.
From Chukhung there are 4 trails. One heads to Chukhung Ri (5,550m) , where you have the best view of the Lhotse and Nuptse walls. At first we thought to climb to acclimatize, but it was too uneven for what awaited us the next day.
Another path, to the Island Peak Base Camp that we will follow this afternoon to acclimatize,
A third where we have come from Dingboche , and a fourth path that is the one that we will follow the next day towards Lobuche crossing the Kongma La Pass (5,535 m).
After a very rich meal, as is usual; We prepare to go part of the way to the Island Peak Base Camp, which will be useful for a better acclimatization.
But that's the next stage.
