Itinerary description
This is a great hike to check out the some of western sections of Fraser Island. We started this adventure by catching the barge from River Heads (near Hervey Bay). The barge dropped us all at Wanggoolba Creek where we walked past the airport, along the 4WD road 3km to the Ungowa turn off. From here it was a further 6km along the 4WD track to the Ungowa Camp grounds. Whilst at Ungowa we found two old rusting barges and an abandoned Forestry Centre. The next day we followed the 4WD road back and around to Central Station (11km). Day 3 we hiked from Central to beautiful Lake McKenzie (7km) and on day 4 we hiked 14km to Kingfisher Bay resort where we caught the barge back to River Heads. There are lots to look at on each section. Please do not attempt in the busy holiday season or in dry weather as the 4WD tracks become very soft and hard to walk on.
