Itinerary description
At the beginning of February we went to explore the routes of Lomas de Chillar (the Hills around the River Chillar) and Cruz de Pinto. On that occasion we failed to find the routes we planned to do. We returned today to see if we would be luckier. We parked in the town of Frigiliana, had our coffee and set off down to the River Higueron. This part is a cement road with a steep descent and not very nice. Again we walked upriver passing the Batan reservoir (now used for forest fires), the irrigation system, and we had to cross the river several times. In some places the water was 5 to 8 centimetres deep which we could cross without any problems, and in other places we had to rock hop. Arriving at the sign for the route GR-249 we started to climb up a somewhat difficult pathway. On this occasion we decided to take the route which has a GR-249 label and a big X which brought us through a nice forest. A pathway that rises and falls which soon brings us to a crossing of several routes, from which we began to climb the last 500m to the Pinto Cross. This part is a bit tricky but without too much difficulty. The 360 degree views from the Cross are impressive, mountains, villages, and the Mediterranean. We descended again by the same route to the crossing, where we took the shortest route back to the town. It's a sharp descent, which requires patience and care. Once down we are back again in the river and a most beautiful part of the hike. Finally we climbed the cement road up to the Bar Virtudes where we had a refreshmente before returning home. This is a challenging route but stimulating. It is important to find out the level of the river in rainy periods we were lucky on both occasions. It is a fairly short route but very recommendable.
