Itinerary description
Hike with superb views, valleys, pasture, forests, and the picturesque town of Clermont, along the Berwinne river between the hamlet of Messitert and Henri-Chapelle, and back. The hike actually starts at Froidthier, where it easier to park. The hike also includes a bit of the Gulp and Befve valleys. Some of the paths are across pasture and can be muddy; waterproof shoes are then recommended. Most of the hike is in quiet, rural areas. There is a restaurant near Cosenberg, and one in Clermont. At the start, the hike connects to another hike along the Berwinne river, from Mortreux to Messitert. From the start in Froidthier you take the road towards Henri-Chapelle, and after a short while the minor country raod Bouquaimoulin. This is a road which ends at a farms and then continues as a path which crosses the Berwinne. You climb the other side of the valley, and then take a track towards Oudemoeder, and then on towards Cosenberg. You take a peak at the Berwinne near Heupelen, pass a restaurant, and continue to Cosenberg. From here you take a minor road and then path along the Berwinne, a small stream here, with wetlands. The path ends at a road and you follow this towards La Clouse. Soon you get to the Berwinne again, and then take a path around a farm before continuing to La Clouse. In La Clouse you take the minor road uphill towards the Rue du Mémorial Americain. Along the climb you have great views across the valley of the Berwinne. At the top you cross the main road and take a path through pasture and turnstiles down into the Gulp valley. I met a lot of cows on my way down… In the valley, where the Gulp is not more than a ditch beside the road, you climb the other side through pasture to the Bois de la Hees forest. You walk a bit through it until you get to where the Kinkenweg (a well-known climb for cyclists) arrives on top of the hill. You follow the road to Henri Chapelle. In the town you walk to a viewpoint offering views towards the Tripoint Belgium-Germany-Netherlands. You then leave the town and descend on a path taking you down into the Berwinne valley. You pass at some distance a source of the river, and then you take a gravel road to a farm through the valley passing the young stream. You take another path through pasture and then follow quiet asphalt roads for a while towards Crawhez. Where the road ends you continue on a path. In Crawhez you pass the castle and follow a road for a short while. You then continue on another path through pasture and fields, marked with white turnstiles. This path takes you to Clermont, a picturesque little town with cobblestones, a church, a town hall and a square. There is also a restaurant on the square. You continue past the church and follow a path along vineyards towards a bridge across the RAVeL L38 cycling path. The path continues through fields and pasture to the road Moulin la Haie. Here you follow the Ruisseau de Befve on the path Thier des Oies. On the edge of Thimister you follow a path through pasture along the stream, and then climb through a forest towards the RAVeL cycling path. You follow this cycling path towards Froidthier. Just before the town you take the Chaumont road to Rue D’Aubel. A path takes you uphill to Les Trixhes. You take a path down to the Befve valley and climb back to Les Trixhes and then descend to the Berwinne. You cross pasture and the river, which is much bigger here. You then follow a path towards the hamlet of Messitert along the Berwinne valley. A road climbs away from the valley and you continue back to the RAVeL cycling path. You follow this cycling path back to Froidthier, passing the Berwinne again in the depth below the former rail track. From the end of the cycling path back to the start is not very far.
