Itinerary description
You follow beautiful Ruta de Cares from Caín until Bolín bridge, and then you go up Canal de Trea until you reach the plateau of the Western range of los Picos de Europa, where at Vega d'Ariu you arrive to refugio Marqués de Villaviciosa, and then you go back.
Ruta de Cares is the easy part. In the Canal de Trea you walk steeply up on an unmarked path (which you can intuitively follow). The path is full of loose stones. Good shoes are necessary and sticks very helpful. At around 1500 metres of altitude the path starts to be marked with yellow signs. Next to the refugio you can refill your bottles with water (there is a source), and in the refugio you can buy some cheese, snacks and drinks.
The way down is quite tiring, but you have amazing views on the central massif of los Picos de Europa (Macizo Central).
In the tunnels along ruta de Cares, the GPS got some coordonates wrong so the trail wrongly suggests that you climb and go down some dozens metres.

You can do a small detour to climb a nearby hill for a nice view on the Canal de Trea. Take into account that the surface of the hill is very porous and you do not see whether there is ground/stone under plants: you should watch your step and be careful not to break your leg!

In good weather, on the northern side one can see Asturias until Atlantic Ocean (Biscay Bay / Mar Cantabrico). Unfortunately, on the day Asturias was covered with clouds.
