Fuerteventura: Betancuria - Mirador Morro Velosa

Op deze wandeling verkennen we de omgeving van het stadje Betancuria. Betancuria was vroeger de hoofdstad van het eiland Fuerteventura. Het stadje was strategisch gelegen in een vruchtbaar dal. Tegenwoordig is het stadje Betancuria een belangrijke toeristische bestemming als dé historische plaats van het eiland.

This hike explores the surroundings of the town of Betancuria. The 15th century town was once the capital of the island of Fuerteventura. It was strategically located in a fertile valley. Nowadays Betancuria is a small town but it is a major tourist destination as the most historical site of the island.

We parkeren de auto aan de bushalte onder de kerk van Betancuria en wandelen langs de doorgaande weg FV30 in de richting van Vega de Rio Palmas. We komen voorbij het Archeologisch Museum en 50m voorbij bar Valtarajal gaan linksaf een geplaveid pad omhoog (wit-rood-groen bordje). We stoppen even om rechts van de weg een gerestaureerd waterrad te bekijken en stappen dan verder omhoog door het straatje Calle San Buenaventura.

You can park the car at the bus stop, below the church of Betancuria, and walk from there along the FV30 main road in the direction of Vega de Rio Palmas. Pass the Archaeological Museum and 50m beyond bar Valtarajal, go left onto a paved path (white-red-green sign). Do stop a moment to take a look at the restored waterwheel at the right side of the road before going further up the alley Calle San Buenaventura.

Goed 100m verder, aan een electriciteitsmast, gaan we rechtdoor een onverhard pad op (GR131 bordje). Het vrij brede pad klimt in enkele ruime bochten uit de vallei omhoog. In de ruwe steenvelden op de helling links en langs de boord van de weg groeit veel Aloë Vera. Waarschijnlijk aangeplant ten behoeve van de "Aloe Vera Fresca" shop, beneden op de FV30 aan het begin van dit pad.

Some 100m further on, at an electricity pylon, go straight on an unpaved path (with GR131 sign). This fairly wide path climbs in a few wide turns out of the valley. In the rough stone fields on the slope to the left and along the edge of the road grows much Aloe Vera. Probably planted for use by the "Aloe Vera Fresca" shop, down on the FV30 at the beginning of this path.

We komen op de pas Degollada del Marrubio, waar er enkele picknicktafels onder een afdakje staan. Hier verlaten we GR131 en slaan linksaf met naar het oosten uitzicht op de vlakte van Antigua en naar het westen over het dal van Betancuria. Het pad loopt langs een laag stenen muurtje naar de Tegu-top (647m hoogte). Verrassend hoeveel wind dat lage muurtje opvangt: vanaf de Tegu loopt het pad aan de andere kant van het muurtje en voelen we aan de lijve dat Fuerteventura zijn naam niet gestolen heeft!

We arrive at the pass Degollada del Marrubio, there are some picnic tables under a shed. Here we leave GR131 and turn left on, to the east overlooking the plain of Antigua and to the west overlooking the valley of Betancuria. The trail runs along a low stone wall to the Tegu summit (647m altitude). It is surprising how much cover from the wind you can get from that low wall: from Tegu on the trail goes on the other side of the wall and you surely do feel what Fuerteventura's name is al about!

In de verte is op de top het uitzichtpunt op Morro Velosa reeds zichtbaar. We dalen even langs een lager gedeeltje tot aan aan waterhuisje en klimmen dan langs een eerder vaag pad de helling omhoog naar de Mirador Morro Velosa (675m).

In the distance on the peak you already see the view point of Morro Velosa. Descend a while along a lower section to a small waterpumping building and then climb up along a rather vague trail up the slope to the Mirador Morro Velosa (675m).

Het gebouw op het uitzichtpunt is een ontwerp van de beroemde Canarische artiest César Manrique: een elegant huis met een houten galerij en afgewerkt in de kleuren van het landschap. Prachtig uitzicht over het eiland en op heldere dagen is ook de Pico de Teide op Tenerife zichtbaar. Binnen leren we meer over de geologische geschiedenis van dit vulkanische eiland en genieten in het cafetaria van een pauze en een koffie.

The building on the viewing point was designed by the famous Canary artist Cesar Manrique: an elegant house with a wooden gallery and finished in the colors of the landscape. Magnificent views of the island and on a clear day Pico de Teide on Tenerife is visible. Inside you will learn a bit more about the geological history of this volcanic island and can enjoy a break and a coffee in the cafeteria.

Van aan het uitkijkpunt keren we even op onze stappen terug tot aan het waterhuisje. Hier dalen we rechts omlaag langs een aanvankelijk steil en ruw stenen pad omlaag in het kerfdal Majada de la Perra (Majada = schapenstal, perra = teef). Beneden in het dal zien we rechts zandwallen waarmee men het schaarse water probeert op te vangen. Erg veel water is er niet, maar wel genoeg om het aanvankelijk dorre pad om te toveren tot een groen stukje met palmen en agaven, waartussen het krioelt van de grondeekhoorns.

From the lookout point return on your steps back up to the waterpump house, where you go right down along an initially steep and rough stone path down into the V-shaped valley of Majada de la Perra (Majada = stable, perra = bitch). Down in the valley there are on the right sand barriers in an attempt to collect the scarce water. There is not a lot of water, but still enough to transform the initially barren trail to a green patch with palms and agaves, swarming with ground squirrels.

Het pad komt uit op een dwarspad dat we naar rechts volgen tot aan ruïne van het 15de eeuwse Franciskanerklooster Convento de San Buenaventura. Het asfaltwegeltje voert ons hier linksaf terug naar Betancuria, dat we al na enkele minuten bereiken.

The path ends at a side path to the right, going to the ruins of the 15th-century Franciscan Convento de San Buenaventura. The small asphalt road to the left takes you back to Betancuria in a few minutes.

Deze wandeling is niet geschikt voor rol- of kinderwagens.

This hike is not suited for wheel chairs or strollers.
