Fuerteventura: Embalse de los Molinos

Op deze wandeling bezoeken we de Embalse de los Molinos, het grootste stuwmeer van Fuerteventura. Het werd in de jaren 1960 aangelegd in de Barranco de Los Molinos om landbouwgronden te irrigeren. Het regent echter te zelden en te weinig om de valllei te vullen en het beoogde doel te bereiken. Tegenwoordig is het een natuurgebiedje. Het meer is verzout en half dichtgeslibd en werd een belangrijk broed- en overwinterings- gebied voor vogels.

On this hike we visit the Embalse de los Molinos, the largest reservoir on Fuerteventura. It was built in the 1960s in the Barranco de Los Molinos to irrigate farmland. However, it doesn't rain enough to fill the valley and achieve the objective. Today it is a small nature reserve. The lake is salified and half silted and became an important breeding and wintering area for birds.

We vertrekken in Llanos de la Conception. Het dorpje heeft een zeer verspreide bebouwing, waardoor er geen duidelijk dorpscentrum is. Aan een kruispuntje op de FV30 doorgaande weg naar Antigua ligt Bar Garcia aan een bushalte, waar we aan de wandeling beginnen.

Point of departure is Llanos de la Conception. The buildings in this village are very scattered, so there is no clear village center. At a cross point on the FV30 road to Antigua you will find Bar Garcia and a bus stop: here we started the hike.

Nauwelijks 100m verderop langs de FV30 gaan we rechtsaf in de richting van Playa del Valle. We klimmen langs deze weinig bereden asfaltweg naar de Degollada Santa Maria Magdalena. Vlak voor een bocht naar links verlaten we de asfaltweg en volgen een pad dat schuin rechts de heuvels in loopt. Hier en daar is het pad niet meer dan een paar vage wielsporen, maar de richting blijft toch duidelijk.

About 100m further along the FV30, turn right in the direction of Playa del Valle and climb along this little used asphalt road to the Degollada Santa Maria Magdalena. Just before a turn to the left leave the asphalt road and follow a path that runs diagonally to the right up the hills. Here and there the path is but a faint wheel track, but the direction remains clear.

We steken een eerste afgeronde heuveltop over en vatten dan de wat stevigere klim aan naar de Morro de las Tabaibas. Naar links kijken we uit over de Barranco del Valle en in de verte een geitenfarm, naar rechts is er de wijde vlakte van Llanos de la Conception. Een paar honderd meter voor de top komen we voorbij een wat verweerd houten kruis voor "Bruno" en het opschrift 'unvergessen' op een steen. Wie Bruno was en wat hem hier overkwam weet ik niet, maar iemand gaf genoeg om hem om in dit woest en verlaten landschap een gedenktekentje op te richten.

After crossing the first rounded hilltop, starts the more substantial climb up the Morro de las Tabaibas. To the left you overlook the Barranco del Valle and in the distance a goat farm, to the right there are the wide plains of Llanos de la Conception. A few hundred meters before the summit we passed a somewhat weathered wooden cross for "Bruno" and the word "unvergessen" on a stone. Who Bruno was and what happened overhere I do not know, but someone cared enough about him to erect a memorial on this wild desolate slope.

Eens over de top komen we aan een vervallen muur en een weideafsluiting, die we naar rechts volgen naar de Morro del Sol. We blijven rechts van het hek, waar achter enkele houten bouwsels wat beschutting bieden aan de geiten die hier hun schamele kostje bijeenscharrelen. Net voor de top van de Morro del Sol volgen we de weideafsluiting naar rechts omlaag. Het pad wordt steeds vager en wat moeilijker begaanbaar, maar we blijven gewoon langs de afsluiting de helling omlaag wandelen.

Once over the top you get at a crumbling wall and a meadowfencing. Follow the fence to the right to the Morro del Sol. Stay to the right of the fence. On the other side some wooden structures provide shelter for the goats, scratching their meager food. Just before the summit of Morro del Sol, follow the meadow fencing right downwards. The path becomes vaguer and less passable, but just keep walking downwards along the fence.

Weldra komt het stuwmeer in zicht. De wat gammele weideafsluiting loopt tot in het meer, maar er zijn enkele openingen waar je er door kunt om linksaf de oever te volgen. Een gebaand pad is er hier niet meer: zoek gewoon je weg tussen de rotsen en struiken om de oever van de Barranco Fuente Lopes te volgen (die hier op het stuwmeer aansluit), tot je het waterloopje met droge voeten kunt oversteken.

Soon you will have the lake in sight. The somewhat ramshackle meadow fencing extends into the lake, but there are gaps where you can cross the fence and go left to follow the shoreline. There is no longer a real path: just find your way among the rocks and bushes to follow the banks of the Barranco Fuente Lopes (which connects here to the lake), until you find a spot to cross the bed with dry feet.

Aan de overzijde klimmen we de oever omhoog tot op een van de geitenpaadjes, die ons verder rond het meer en naar de stuwdam brengen. We steken langs het pad boven op de dammuur over en gaan naar rechts door een hek en volgen het wat dieper onder ons liggende meer.

On the other side of the (dry) river bed, climb up the somewhat steep shore and follow one of the goat paths that continue around the lake to the dam. Use the path to the other side atop the dam wall, where you go to the right through a gate to follow the cliffy banks of the lake.

Eens het meer achter ons ligt gaan we in de richting van een grote veefokkerij. Voorbij een huis met een ronde gemetselde watertank ernaast, maar voor de veefokkerij, dalen we af naar de barranco. Er is geen gebaand pad, zoek gewoon de best begaanbare plaats waar zo weinig water staat dat je kunt oversteken en aan de overkant weer uit de bedding klimmen in de richting van een oud gebouw met twee verdiepingen en een palm erachter.

Once the lake behind you, walk in the direction of a large cattle farm. Go left around a house with a circular masonry watertank next to it, and descend into the barranco before reaching the cattle farm. There is no paved path or bridge, just look for the most accessible place with little or no water where you can cross the riverbed and go on up to the road in the direction of an old building with two floors and a palm tree behind it.

We lopen op een duidelijke rijsporenpiste langs het gebouw en gaan bij de splitsing rechts. We zijn hier in de vlakte onder de bergruggen die we eerder op de dag bewandelden. Bijna aan de voet van de Morro del Sol, waar de Barranco de las Majadas uit de bergen omlaag komt, draait de grindweg voor een hek wat naar links. In de verte zien we Llanos de los Conception liggen.

Follow the wheel track dirtroad along the building and go to the right at the junction. Here we are in the plain below the mountain ridges we walked on earlier today. Almost at the foot of Morro del Sol, where the Barranco de las Majadas comes down from the mountains and just before a fence the track turns to the left. In the distance you will soon see Llanos de los Conception.

Een kilometertje voorbij een geitenkraal wandelen we weer op geplaveide paden langs de eerste huizen van het dorp en komen voorbij enkele stijlvolle tuinen met hoge zuilvormige cactussen. Aan de straat die linksaf naar het kerkje loopt, gaan we rechtdoor en bij de volgende splitsing links komen we terug bij Bar Garcia aan de FV30.

A kilometer past a goat corral you will reach the paved paths and the first houses of the village and you come along some stylish gardens with tall columnar cacti. On the street that runs to the church on the left, go straight ahead. At the next intersection turn left back to Bar Garcia and the FV30 main road.

Onderweg op deze wandeling vindt u geen schaduw en - behalve het cafeetje aan het beginpunt - ook geen horeca of winkeltje. Best hoofdbedekking en wat drank meenemen! Rol- en kinderwagens kunnen niet mee.

En route on this hike you will find no shade and - apart from the cafe at the starting point - no catering or shop. Bring head gear and something to drink!
This hike is not suited for wheel chairs or strollers.
