Fuerteventura: Ermita de la Peña

De Barranco de las Penitas is een interessant stukje natuur op Fuerteventura, misschien wel een van de mooiste plaatsjes op het anderszins woestijnachtige eiland. Het is niet alleen een aangename streek, je vindt er ook een van de weinige (stuw)meren van Fuerteventura en tegen de rotswanden van de kloof staat het kapelletje van de patrones van Fuerteventura, Nuestra Senora de la Pena (Onze Lieve Vrouw van de Rots), dat ook het doel is van een jaarlijkse processie-bedevaart in september.

Op de FV30 ongeveer 400m voorbij de kerk van Vega de Rio Palmas in de richting van Pájara, nemen we het straatje FV323 rechtsaf. Na 1 km is er rechts voor het bruggetje over de bedding van de Barranco de la Penitas een open plekje waar we kunnen parkeren en langs een grindpad de barranco inwandelen.

Er is hier flink wat plantengroei, erg ongewoon voor Fuerteventura. We volgen de meestal droge bedding, slechts hier en daar staan er enkele plassen of loopt er nog sliertje water door de beekjes en het kost ons weinig moeite om droogvoets te blijven. Bij een splitsing houden we links aan en wandelen over een aangenaam pad tussen grote rotsblokken en langs agaves, cactussen en dadelpalmen naar het stuwmeer, of wat er van over blijft. In november 2016 stond er nog vrij veel water, maar in seizoenen met weinig regenval zou het wel eens uitgedroogd kunnen zijn.

We wandelen naar de stuwmuur over een gemakkelijk pad, voorzien van een touw-reling, tussen de met riet begroeide oever en de rotsige helling. Ter hoogte van de stuwdam zien we in de verte tegen de reusachtige rotsflank het witte kapelletje Ermita de Nuestre Senora de la Pena en verderop aan het einde van de kloof zien we de vlakte.

Een hier en daar met muurtjes versterkt pad kronkelt omlaag naar de kapel. Dit pad omlaag is wat smaller en steiler dan het pad bovenaan het meer, maar echt moeilijk is het niet. Wees wel extra voorzichtig als het nat zou zijn! De kleine kapel is normaliter geopend en naast de kapel is een prachtig uitzichtrijk plekje om even uit te blazen voor de terugtocht aangevat wordt. Daarvoor volgen we gewoon de weg terug die we gekomen zijn.

Als u in de omgeving van Betancuria bent en slechts enkele uren tijd hebt om te wandelen, dan is deze tocht mijn absolute aanrader!

The Barranco de las Penitas is an interesting natural area on Fuerteventura, maybe one of the most beautiful places on the otherwise desertlike island. Besides being a very nice area, you walk along one of the few water reservoirs of Fuerteventura and there is the small chapel of the patron saint of Fuerteventura, Nuestra Senora de la Pena (Virgin of the Rock).

On the FV30, about 400m past the church of Vega de Rio Palmas in the direction of Pájara, drive down the street to the right (FV323). After 1 km in a slight curve just before the bridge over the bed of the Barranco de la Penitas is an open place on the right side of the road where you can park the car and walk along a gravel path into the barranco.

There is a lot of vegetation, very unusual for Fuerteventura. Follow the usually mostly dry bed, not much water is left in the stream, so it takes little effort to keep your feet dry. At a fork keep left and walk on a pleasant path between huge boulders and along agaves, cacti and date palms to the reservoir, or what remains of it. In November 2016 there was still quite a lot of water in the lake, but apparantly it is often almost dry in seasons with little rainfall.

This is one of the most attractive walks of Fuerteventura: its route is simple, without long distances or steep slopes, making it suitable for almost everyone, with appropriate precautions. The path runs through the gorge, with only a few areas of a bit more difficult access. At the end of the gorge is the Penitas dam, built after the Spanish Civil War.

The narrow trail winds amidts large boulders. Beyond the reservoir we follow a stone paved path built into the sides of the barranco. A couple of minutes down the path you spot the tiny white chapel of Nuestra Senora de la Pena on a rocky outcrop above the streambed. The path next to the chapel is not as easy as the route leading to the dam but is not really difficult, just be very carefull if it's wet!

The small chapel door is normally open and next to the chapel is a small open spot with nice views to take a break before you begin the return. In order to return to the parking place, just follow back the way you came.
