Fuerteventura: Islas de Lobos

Isla de Lobos is een onbewoond eiland op drie kilometer ten noordoosten van Fuerteventua en 8 km ten zuiden van Lanzarote. Het 6 km² grote Isla de Lobos is relatief jong. Het ontstond 2 miljoen jaar geleden, Fuerteventura zelf werd 20 miljoen jaar geleden gevormd. De uitgedoofde en ingestorte vulkaan vormt het hoogste punt met 127 meter.

Isla de Lobos is an uninhabited island 3 kilometers northeast of Fuerteventua and 8 kilometers south of Lanzarote. The 6 km² Lobos is relatively young. It originated 2 million years ago, Fuerteventura itself was formed 20 million years ago. The extinct and collapsed volcano is the highest point at 127 meters.

Het eiland is vrij kaal met duinen, enkele stranden, zoutpannen en vele 'hornitos' (kleine vulkaankegels). Nabij El Puertito, het enige plaatsje op Lobos, leggen de overzetboten aan en is er een klein houten bezoekerscentrum. In het plaatsje zelf staan enkele vrij schamele huisjes en is er een restaurantje. Isla de Lobos is een verrassend eilandje en was een van de hoogtepunten van ons bezoek aan Fuerteventura.

The island is quite barren with dunes, some beaches, salt marshes and many 'hornitos' (small volcanic cones). The ferry drops its passengers at a tiny jetty next to what passes for the island's only settlement, El Puertito: a handful of simple cottages. There is a small wooden visitor center. In the settlement itself are some rather shabby houses and a small restaurant. Isla de Lobos is a surprising little island and was one of the highlights of our visit to Fuerteventura.

In de 15de eeuw troffen de eerste (Spaanse) bezoekers er een kolonie monniksrobben aan ('lobos marinos' of 'zeewolven'), die het eiland zijn naam gaven. Zeewolven zijn er ondertussen jammer genoeg niet meer. De vuurtoren op het noordelijke punt Punta de Martino werd in 1865 gebouwd. Sinds de laatste vuurtorenwachter het eiland verliet in 1968, zijn er geen vaste bewoners meer op Lobos. In 1982 kreeg het eiland het de beschermde status van natuurpark.

In the 15th century the first (Spanish) visitors noticed a colony of monk seals ('lobos marinos' or 'sea-wolves"), which gave the island its name. Sadly none of them survived the following centuries. The lighthouse on the northern tip of Punta de Martino was built in 1865. The last lighthouse keeper left the island in 1968, he was the last permanent resident of Lobos. In 1982 the island got the protected status of Natural Park.

Kleine ferrybootjes vertrekken meerdere keren per dag uit de haven van Corralejo. Het heen en terug ticket koop je in het tickethokje naast de parking aan de haven van Corralejo. In november 2017 kostte het heen-terug ticket 15 euro, de eerste ferry vertrok om 10u en de laatste om 16u of 17u. De overtocht duurde 20 minuten.

Small ferry boats depart several times a day from the port of Corralejo. Buy your return ticket at the ticket booth next to the parking lot at the port of Corralejo. In November 2017 the round-trip ticket was 15 euros, the first ferry sailed at 10am and the last one at 16h or 17h. The ferry crossing took 20 minutes.

Over een goed onderhouden, gemakkelijk wandelpad kan men rond het eiland lopen. Het pad naar de top van de Montana de Caldera is een ruig geplaveid trappenpad. Op heel het eiland mogen de aangelegde wandelpaden niet verlaten worden! Neem je voorzorgen voor een hete dag (geen schaduw) en neem drank en wat eten mee. Van de aanlegkade wandelen we naar het kleine houten gebouwtje, waarin het Centro de Visitantes is ondergebracht. U ziet er wat informatie over de geschiedenis van het eilandje en er zijn ook toiletten.

You can walk around the island on a well-maintained, easy path. The path to the summit of the Montana de Caldera is a roughly paved path with stairs. On the Isle of Lobos it is forbidden to leave the walkways! Prepare yourself for a hot day (no shadow) and bring your drinks and eventually food. From the quay you pass to the small wooden building of the Centro de Visitantes. You will see some information about the history of the island and there are also toilets.

Rechtsaf op het wandelpad komen we na tien minuten aan de paar eenvoudige huisjes van El Puertito. Het lijkt wel Grieks door de smalle steegjes, gewitte muren en blauwe venster en deuren. Wat verderop bij de splitsing houden we rechts aan en komen aan Las Lagunitas, lagunes met zoutmoerassen. Het pad maakt een haarspeldbocht en wat verderop volgen we even het zijpad naar rechts om een groep agaven te bekijken waarvan de 8 meter hoge bloesems een bosje vormen.

Right onto the trail you arrive after ten minutes at the few simple houses of El Puertito. It looks Greek because of its narrow alleys, whitewashed walls and blue doors and windows. Further on at the junction, keep right to Las Lagunitas, lagoons and salt marshes. The trail makes a hairpin turn and further up take de sandy side path to the right to take a look at a group of agaveswhose 8-meter high blossoms form a grove.

Terug op het hoofdpad bereiken we al snel de Faro de Martino op de noordelijke punt van het eiland. Van aan de vuurtoren hebben een een prachtig uitzicht op Lanzarote en op Lobos zelf vallen de 'hornitos' op, de kleine spitse heuveltjes die ooit kraterpijpen waren.

Back on the main trail, you soon reach the Faro de Martino on the northern tip of the island. From the lighthouse you will have a beautiful views of Lanzarote and of Lobos with the countless 'hornitos', the little pointy hills that were once crater pipes.

Terug aan de voet van de heuvel met de vuurtoren gaan we aan de splisting rechts in de richting van de Montana de Caldera. Een wegwijzer toont waar je naar rechts moet en wat verderop begint de klim naar de top langs een geplaveid paadje, deels met treden. Na een korte, stevige klim staan we op bijna 127m hoogte van het uitzicht over de drie eilanden te genieten: Fuerteventura, Lanzarote en Lobos zelf. De klim en afdaling van de Montana de Caldera zijn niet geschikt voor rol- of kinderwagens.

Back at the base of the hill with the lighthouse, go right at the junction in the direction of the Montana de Caldera. A sign indicates the path to the right that leads to where you begin the climb to the summit along a paved path, partly with steps. After a short, steep climb we are enjoying at nearly 127m altitude views over the three islands of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Lobos itself. Climbing the Montana de Caldera can not be done with wheel chairs or strollers.

We keren langs dezelfde weg terug naar het hoofdpad en komen al snel aan de zandduinen van het strandje Playa de la Concha. Tien minuten verder zijn we weer aan de aanlegsteiger van de ferry. We hadden nog even tijd tot de ferry kwam en wandelden verder naar La Puertito. In het overdrukke restaurantje kan men aan een 'loket' een drankje kopen, binnen zitten of eten is enkel voor wie vooraf reserveerde.

Return along the same path back to the main trail and soon you will reach the sand dunes of the beach Playa de la Concha. In ten minutes from here you will be back at the jetty. We had some time left and walked on to La Puertito. In the over busy restaurant you can buy a drink at a 'counter'. You need to prebook your lunch if you want to sit inside the restaurant.
