Itinerary description
A very wet day on the Costa del Sol. We set out somewhat worried about our hiking plans in the area of the Gorge of the Gaitanes and the Conde de Gualalhorce Reservoir. We intended going first to the Gorge, and from there to the nearby Peak of the Convent, and then on to the reservoir and the dam. When we arrived at the Viewing point of the Tajo del Almochón to see the Gorge, we decided to forget about the visit to the Peak of the Convent, because of the cold winds, the clouds and mist, which reduced the visibility. The climb to the Viewing point is along a wide mountain path, except for the last 200 meters that pass over rocky land which is somewhat dangerous. The descent is very pleasant and it brings us to the Gaitanejo Dam from where we went along the path as far as we could to the Camino del Rey - the King´s Pathway. (There is a gate stopping people going to the damaged area.) We could see the plaque where we are told of the Engineer of this and many other important works, Rafael Benjumea y Burín, who was made the first Count of Guadalhorce by King Alfonso XII in 1921. The view of the Gaitanejo Canyon is very impressive. We passed bye the Hydraulic Station from the beginning of the XX Century. From there we returned along the shores of the Gaitanejo reservoir until we arrived to the Guadalhorce Dam and its Reservoir. We duly sat in the King´s seat in front of the reservoir. As I said there was a downpour in Malaga and on the Costa, but we were lucky to escape with a few drops of rain until the end of our walk from when it rained all the way back to Benalmadena in the car.
