Itinerary description
This track allows to visit:
A] Jordà's beech forest
Jordà's beech forest (Fageda d'en Jordà in Catalan language) is a natural reserve comprising a beech forest unique in Spain because it grows on a relatively flat area, formed by a casting cooled lava from the Croscat volcano, at an altitude that is not common in the Iberian Peninsula for these trees, between 550 and 650 m. It covers an area of about 4.8 km2 and is packed with own lava that can reach over 20 m high.
B] Croscat volcano
The Croscat is both the youngest and highest volcano in the Iberian Peninsula, with the last eruption dated back to about 14,000 years Before Present. The volcanic cone has a horseshoe shape and its northeastern flank was quarried for volcanic gravel until the early 1990s, exposing the internal structure of the cone from top to bottom.
C] Santa Margarida volcano
The Santa Margarida volcano has a perimeter of 2 kilometers and a height of 682 meters. The hermitage of Santa Margarida, after which the volcano was named, is inside the crater of the volcano.
D] 'La Fageda' cooperative
The Fageda is a company with social purposes that employs people with intellectual disabilities or chronic mental illness.
Dedicated to the production of yogurts, ice creams, jams and nursery gardening. It's the third largest producer of yogurt in Catalonia, taking care of the entire process, from breeding cattle to the final product.
