Itinerary description

This is a one-way walk from the station of El Colmenar (Gaucín station) to the station of San Pablo de Buceite. Drive to San Pablo and park near the railway station. We took the 11:15 train which gets into El Colmenar station just 9 minutes later. (Check train times on www.renfe.com as they change during the year). Then you walk above the river Guadiaro back to San Pablo. It's a lovely walk, mostly on forest tracks and there are some great open views of the countryside.

My husband suggested the name for the walk as we have never seen so many wild strawberry trees as we did on this route. They are called "madroños" in Spanish, and the madroño tree - along with a bear - has been part of the coat of arms of the city of Madrid since the 13th century!

This was my first try at this walk and there are two places where I went wrong; if you look at the overall map you can easily see these two places as we retraced our steps to find the correct route. 1. The first place to take care is at an open area in the woods where you'll see a wooden fire-watching hut and a large pipe lying on the ground. You need to go left here to the wooden fire-watch hut and pick up the track behind the hut (we carried straight on which was not correct).

2. The second place to take care is just after you've passed the little lake. At the next junction, GO RIGHT towards a house and a large green field and pass through a gate into the field (we carried straight on and that was not correct).

So ignore these obvious two "detours" (you can see where we retraced our steps by looking at the map of the overall route) and read the accompanying notes carefully because they will tell you where to take care and the correct route to follow.

The stats say 16 kms and 400m of ascent - so it's a medium length walk, but the climbs are gentle as the tracks go up and down and there's no really exhausting ascent in the whole route.

Start at Gaucín station.

Having taken the train one stop from San Pablo, alight from the train and walk along the platform (or along the little road which runs parallel) to the corner with lots of colourful signs.

After the farmhouse, go through the gap inbetween two fences, then see notes below

After going through the gap between two fences , keep going in the same direction and try to pick up a path through the woods; it was very overgrown and difficult to find the path, so we just headed up to the right to join the driveable track above. You can see from the map (go to "Raster map view") that you could just stay on the driveable track from the farmhouse but this would add some distance to the route. If you don't mind a bit of scrambling through the bushes then this short cut worked fine.

Go off the track to the left where you will find some rocks and great views down the Guadiaro valley back to El Colmenar. This is a good place to stop for lunch.

DO NOT GO STRAIGHT ON HERE. We went wrong here and carried on down the main track. The correct route is: At the open area with a fire-watching hut and a large pipe, walk to the left and pass immediately next to the wooden fire-watch hut; behind it you will see a good track. WALK DOWN THIS GOOD TRACK.

Thank you! I'm glad you and Jacqui and the group all enjoyed this route. I will do it again in December when the strawberry trees should be in bloom again.
