Itinerary description
The perfect wilderness hiking trail. It’s rough and tough but you find tranquility, remoteness and total solitude. The trail is a mix of Jeep track, narrow hiking tracks and quite a bit of scrambling. Avoid the hot summer months.

Great wilderness walk but, and unfortunately it’s a big but, on route C after the descent from Penhill’s saddle cairn, where the route swings south the cairns disappear. Even after all of us searching extensively and using the app we were unable to find Penhill’s top trail cairn. Along the entire route we saw only two Gecko signs. At the end of the off-trail section, the poor route markings necessitated bushwhacking down a steep kloof to reach the jeep track. Fortunately we were all experienced hikers and relatively fit. Even so the time spent looking for cairns and the trail meant we unnecessarily wasted a lot of time, energy and were all low on water. All ended well but could easily have not. Improving the markings, especially near the end of the off-trail section would make this a more enjoyable walk.
Dear Stephen
Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you got lost on the trail. When you phoned me and told me you were lost, you said that the group split again and the two hikers with the GPS and cell phone with Wikiloc was miles behind you and that you did not have anything with you. Nevertheless, I sent you the link to the Wikiloc Gecko Trail C as well as screen shots of the trail on Wikiloc. On Saturday night I made you aware that the cairns might not be there anymore due to baboons and that your group should not split up so that you all have the benefit of a GPS/App with Wikiloc which will make it easy to find the trail.
When Jurgen is back I will ask him to respond to your review and contact you directly as well.
