Itinerary description
If you love bush bashing and climbing rugged mountain ridges, this 14km circuit is for you. We started this adventure from the end of Sam Kelly Rd, near Kenilworth, as it enters Mapleton National Park. From here, we headed south on the Sunshine Coast Great Walk track for 1.5km then crossed Gheerulla Creek (to the left) and headed up a steep 1km section to the top of the ridge. Once at the top, turn right and follow an old overgrown fire trail 1km across to meet the Oaky Creek Lookout track. Hike left about 800m and you arrive at the stunning Oaky Creek Lookout with views of Kenilworth Bluff, Mt Cooroora and around to Mt Cooroy. Once you have taken in the views, head east, skirting down the side of the lookout to a small cave and then down the ridge to meet the Trail Bike Track. Follow the bike track left, 3.5km along a very undulating and at times steep track to the Gheerulla Creek Camp Grounds and onto your starting point. The trail is very steep and challenging in places so DO NOT attempt if you are not super fit and handle slippery slopes. For more information check out our Facebook Hiking Site- "Take A Hike- SEQ".
