Itinerary description
<<< English >>> The route from Gijón to Covadonga in four days is not difficult and is not very demanding if you have a good physical shape. If you choose well your end points of each stage hen you can get the distances traveled each day in the order of 20 km. No big climbs but there are many stretches of asphalt but with very little traffic because they are secondary roads. Of course, always check the weather. There is not much opportunity to buy anything in the villages; bars may be closed. It is advisable to have the accommodation pre-booked so you do not have to waste time at the end of the stage looking where to sleep. It is also convenient to take paper maps with you. I got the plans in the National Geographic Institute (www.ign.es), part of the Ministry of Development of Spain: use the format * .TIFF MTN25 raster type and print it in DIN A3 paper size. They are very big files, it will take some time to download them. This route is formed by the maps: 0014-4, 0029-2, 0030-1, 0030-3, 0030-4, 0031-3 and 0055-1. And I advise bringing GPS tracks stored in a flash memory pendrive, just in case you delete them in your GPS unit by mistake, as it happened to me. I returned from Covadonga to Gijón by Bus, in three stages: Covadonga-Cangas de Onís, Cangas de Onís-Oviedo and Oviedo-Gijón. Timetable and prices can be found on the webpage www.alsa.es. The route is interesting as a whole. Day 1: Gijón-Villaviciosa. Hotel Bahía (985-163 700, Gijón), room #105, two stars, very clean, simple, € 35 without breakfast. Two small beds with very clean sheets. Good heating. Waypoint "Detour 01": do not miss. Waypoint "Detour 02": turn right and follow the path with earth and stones. In the Waypoint "Private road" I advise you to follow my track that is shorter than follow the yellow signs. This stage is a middle distance one, to begin with encouragement. Quiet roads but with a few muddy sections. Hostal El Sol (985-891 130 Villaviciosa), two stars. My room was #6. I took that room because it was double room (36 €) and double rooms have bath and shower in the room. The room had no blinds. The single rooms (20 €) share a bathroom and shower. It is a pilgrim hostel very, very simple. Breakfast included. Day 2: Villaviciosa-Sietes. Short stage, it goes through very lost and forgotten roads, such as the Ríu Profundu or the area near the village of Buslad. Hostal Casa Prida (985-976 288, Sietes). It is a very small room, with bath and shower. It has two beds (bunk beds), a small closet and no TV. Room #2, enough to rest and have a shower. 20 euros. Day 3: Sietes-Arriondas. It is the longest stage and much is on asphalt. It is the most beautiful of the entire route because you go through typically Asturian landscapes. Hotel La Guindal (985-843 636, Arriondas), room #208 is fine. Breakfast included. 30 euros. Day 4: Arriondas-Covadonga. Waypoint "Detour 04": do not miss. Waypoint "Cross" follows the asphalt trail, do not go to the left and do not cross the river. Waypoint "Detour 05": prevents passage through the narrow tunnel. Hotel El Repelao (985-846 141, Covadonga), the best. Very friendly, good breakfast, no noise, bathtub, spacious bed. Room name is Ordiales
