Itinerary description

On this route you'll encounter a little-known Girona, close to the historic city centre, and discover a good sample of the natural, cultural and ethnographical heritage of the Gavarres.

Crossing the lovely Sant Daniel Valley, following the course of the Galligants River and its tributaries, passing through a landscape dotted with woods and small farms, you'll enter the protected natural area of the Gavarres to climb the Sant Miquel mount, from where you'll enjoy magnificent panoramic views of much of the Girona region, from the Empordà to the Pyrenees.

In September of 2011 this mine was declared “Cultural patrimony of national interest” by Generalitat de Catalunya, category of “area of ethnological interest”, since it is considered that “this mine is a key testimony of the human presence and due to the diverse mining activities typical of the Massís de Les Gavarres area”. The Castle of Sant Miquel is situated at the top of the hill of Sant Miquel, which lies between Celrà and Girona on one of the most popular cycling and walking routes in the Girona area. The oldest remains date from the medieval period and are made up of building that's thought to have been a watchtower, part of a wall and an hermitage with a polygonal, fortified apse. There's no written record referring to the tower, whereas the hermitage was dedicated to Sant Miquel and built in a Gothic style in the mid-15th century. During the Second Carlist War (1846-1849), on the site of the remains of the apse of the hermitage, a tower of the military optical telegraph line between Madrid and the French border was built. The castle's location is strategic - it has an excellent vantage point over the valleys of Sant Daniel and Celrà.

The convent was founded in the early 11th century by will of countess Ermesinde of Carcassonne, who wanted to found a nunnery here. The church, based on that of the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, with the addition of a transept, was later renewed. It has a cloister with two floors, the lower from the 13th century (with Romanesque decorations) and the upper, in Gothic style, from the 15th century. It has double columns with Corinthian capitals.

Fantastic but not easy. My kids wanted to kill me on the steeper ascents! Not well sign posted for all of it.

Thanks for commenting @samkett1! Yes, the climb from km 5 to km 6 in particular will knock the wind out of you — especially on a hot day.
