Itinerary description
The Park is recovering from recent drought and fires. It is still dry with lots of dead fall.
The off track sections require confident navigation skills and hard walking.
The camp at Beehive wasn't planned but was required because of limited alternative water sources. If there had been more recent rain then it would be possible to camp on the ridges.
Waypoints
MALLEE CAMP
A boulder cave, nearby slab with rock pools that should contains water after rain.
GIANT SPLIT ROCK
ARROW MARKER
I found this 13m long arrow marker on satellite images. It is surrounded by graffiti of various ages including some from units from the military depot at Wallangara. I presume it is a walk from Beehive dam although there is no track that we could find.
VALLEY OF THE WINDS
Valley of the Winds is an impressive narrow rock gorge situated on Mallee Ridge. It can be traversed with a few technical problems to solve including a need to head underground at one point.
MT NORMAN SUMMIT
The scramble to the summit of Mt Norman is exposed and a rope belay is recommended. Only for experienced scramblers or climbers

Looks good. I was looking at Valley of the Winds, can you please advise whether it's better to do this west-east or east-west? We would be coming across from Turtle Rock.
Hi Michael,
It is easiest to access the Gorge from the East via Mt Norman and Mallee Ridge. It could be traversed from either direction, the Western end is heavy choked with vegetation, and to the East of that there is scramble under and over rocks to get to a higher level. There scramble is not particularly difficult but if you have less confident party members a belay rope may be handy. Those Southern ridges are fairly rugged country and careful navigation and route choice are required. I’ll be interested to hear how you go! MarkL
Hi Mark
Is it possible to do this hike in one day? I noticed that you camped then continued the hike. Cheers
Hi Lina, it would be tough to do in a day, a lot of it is off track and pretty rugged. We did in the drought which is why we headed down to the dam for overnight water. My original plan was to traverse between the Southern Ridges.
Thanks for the advice, Mark, Much appreciated 🙂
I'm looking for the 1880 cairn from your coordinates, not having much luck, any ideas?
Also, what does the 1880 signify?
