Itinerary description

Gjeravica is the second-highest mountain peak in the Accursed Mountains range and the Dinaric Alps range, after Maja Jezercë. It is the second-highest mountain in Kosovo. It has an elevation of 2,656 m above sea level. You can start the hike from Junik or from Decan as we did this time. The road to the starting point is in a very bad condition. Only if you have a big 4x4 you can pass or if you have small car, you can contact Gacaferri Guesthouse. Adriatik and his brother that are managing the guesthouse are very friendly and helpful and they can arrange transport for any of you that want to visit their region also you can stay one or two nights in their guesthouse to do a mini peaks of Balkan.
Gjeravica is somewhat different from the rest of the Accursed mountains in its lack of the stony, limestone texture the other mountains in Accursed Mountains have. Many large and small glacial lakes can be found near the summit. The largest of the lakes is Gjeravica Lake, which is just under the summit and is the origin of the Erenik river. Gjeravica and the Accursed mountains are mostly known for the growth of chestnuts. There are also wild strawberries growing in Gjeravica during the summer. From the top of the mountain if you have better weather conditions you can see the half of Kosovo in the east and long range of large mountain massif of Albanian alps in the west. In the northwest you can see Tromeda (three border peak between Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo) and from the top you can go there for 2.5 hours walking. In the north are peaks of Guri i Kuq 2522(Red stone-in Albanian), northeast you can see Maja e Rups, Veterniku peak. In the east is a great view of Dukagjini region from Deçani to city of Gjakova in southeast.
Under the peak of Gjeravica from the west part is rocky basin of Erenik river called Gropat e Erenikut with two beautiful glacial lakes one in 2400m and the big lake in 2300m above the sea level. Big lake is called Liqeni i likenit and from him begins spring of river Erenik to Drini i Bardhe river. In the northwest part of pas of Gjeravica peak is another beautiful glacial lake called Zemra. This lake has form of heart (Zemra -heart in Albanian).
