he told Milarepa, and then asked for further instruction. Milarepa was
very pleased, and said, "You have already begun to produce merits
[within you], so you should follow these instructions":
To rely on a Guru,
One should pray to him often and sincerely.
When one practices the devotion of the Yidham and
Oakini,
Clearly and often should he meditate on the Arising
Yoga.
When one meditates on transiency and the approach

He should e'er remember

He should cultivate it step by step.

When one reaches the consummation of Dharma,
He should avoid ups-and-downs and make it stable.
When one examines his devotions
To see if they agree with Dharma,

NOTES
1 Compassion of Non-discrimination or Non-discernment (T.T.: dMigs.Pa.
Mei.Pahi.sl"'yiiu)e.), is a spontaneous, non-discriminating, and infinite love em-
bodied in the Uncreated Voidness- the exclusive Compassion of Buddhahood.
From the human point of view, compassion cannot arise without an object about
which it is concerned. Compassion or love seems necessarily to be involved in a
dualistic or subject-object mode. But according to Mahayana Buddhism, the highest
compassion is one that transcends both subject and object, and is brought forth
through the realization of Voidness. It is, in essence, identical with the intuitive
Wisdom-of-Voidness. This is one of the most inscrutible mysteries of Buddhahood.
