Itinerary description

Excellent excursion in the Sierra de Guara due to its proximity to Huesca, its good accessibility, simplicity of the route, short duration and above all because of the unique beauty of the place!
In addition, on this excursion we can visit the rock sanctuary of the Hermitage of San Julian and contemplate the unique nativity scene located inside the Gorga.
Directions: You have to park on one side of the road that borders the Golf Club to the north; we then continue on foot along the road towards Arascues and Lierta for about 250m until we find a detour marked on the right hand side that marks the direction towards San Julian and the Bethlehem. The path ends a few meters further and we will continue along a path in good condition.
We continue along the path that will take us to the San Julian ravine. At some point you will find the signs that mark the route to lead you to the Hermitage of San Julian. The best options is to visit the hermitage on your way back, so we decided to entering the ravine in direction to the Gorge.
Continuing along the path, which becomes increasingly narrow, steep and surrounded by vegetation, even having to cross several rocky outcrops of little importance, we finally reach the entrance to the Gorgas. As soon as we enter we find a large chamber formed by a large crack in the rock that narrows as it gains height. During the middle of the day the sun penetrates inside the gorga creating a beautiful play of light and shadow. It is probably the best time of day to get closer to this unique place.
Within this space we find a curious Nativity Scene where the traditional Holy Mass is celebrated every December 25. Peña Guara organizes every year for this date a hiking trip to attend Mass.
We will enter the cavity illuminated only by a narrow upper crack that barely allows the rays of sunlight to pass through to discover a second equally spectacular chamber a few meters later. The second chamber of the Gorga ends in a narrow flooded crevice that prevents us from moving forward. This is the end of the excursion, unless you are well equipped and had planned to climb rocks and are prepared for it. Do NOT attempt to go beyond this point if you are not an expert rock climber.
Once the visit to the Gorga is finished, we returned the same way back until reaching the sign directing us to the hermitage. Just take the fork and about 10 minutes hike will end up at the hermitage. There is also an earlier path 50 meters before the sign, and will save you some unnecessary going down and up again. The hermitage is a great place to lunch or take a break, enjoying the spectacular views of the Gorgas and the many vultures flying around.
