Itinerary description
Two Days hike.
Initial point: Tourism Information office at Gosau
End point: Hallstatt
Date: May-2017
Sleeping at Gablonzer Hut (very friendly staff and good meals)
Combination Hallstatt to Gosau by Bus (542 & 543)
First day, we hiked from Gosau to Gablonxer Hut. It's a short hike (11 kms) ascending 1039 meters.
Gablonzer Hut is a excellent place to enjoy great views (although you cannot see Gosausse lake) drinking a beer. Good meals and very friendly and helpful staff. We got a three beds bedroom with excellent sights to the valley and mountain.
Second day is harder. First of all you start descending 600 meters to Gosausse (you can avoid this by using the cable, see the waypoint). And them ascend by the opposite side of the valley. This is a variant of other tracks that start at Hintertal. But as we started at Gablonzer Hut we decided to improvise and avoid walking so near of the main road.
It's more easy to get lost at this part of the track, as signals are no as common as previous day. Indeed most of the signals did not indicate way to Hallstatt but other tracks. Indeed, we got lost and have to ask to a kind woman at her farm.
Keep in mid that a lot of signals are in stones, and they can be hided by the snow.
Highly recommended to use GPS or quality maps.
Another point that makes me categorize as Difficult is the distance: 26 kms and 9 hours (including a walk in Hallstatt), with a big ramp down at last 9 kilometers (846 meters). But you can save last 300 meters using the funicular.
Take your time at Hallstatt, is a very very nice (and tourist crowed) town.
Great views, a lot of alternative tracks, not crowed (at least in May).
