Itinerary description
(Description below is in English, waypoints are described in Spanish)
This route is the sixth part of a 10-day hiking trip through the Madrid province, from East to West following GR-10.
The trail starts at the station of Cercedilla and leads us to Alto del León through the following places in the Sierra de Guadarrama :
- Fuente Mata Del Pozo (1.7 km)
- Pradera de Navarrulaque (4.8 km)
- Puente de Hierro de la Navazuela (6.9 km)
- Mirador de la Reina (7.5 km)
- Puerto de la Fuenfría (8.3 km)
- Fuente del Infante (9.8 km)
- Collado de Marichiva (10.5 km)
- Las Porrillas (11.6 km)
- Peña del Águila (12.7 km)
- Collado de Cerromalejo (14.0 km)
- La Peñota (14.9 km)
- Collado de Gibraltar (16.0 km)
- Collado del Mostajo (16.8 km)
- Peña del Cuervo (17.3 km)
- Cerro de Matalafuente (18.2 km)
- Peña del Arcipreste de Hita (18.8 km)
- Collado de la Sevillana (19.5 km)
- Bunker La Sevillana (19.9 km)
The first part of the trail leads us through the centre of Cercedilla towards the north (Camorritos) and then into the woods climbing towards the Pradera de Navarullaque. “From there we follow the wide gravel road towards Puerto de Fuenfría, enjoying the views from Mirador de la Reina along the way.
From Fuenfría we turn left to follow the road towards Peña del Águila, first relatively flat to Collado de Marichiva, then the path climbs to the top at 2015m, the highest point on today’s route.
We descend at the south west side to climb towards the following top, La Peñota at 1945m.
Descending at the other side is a bit more challenging as the path is more rocky and more difficult to follow.
The last 6 km we follow the path in between rocks and bushes, up and down, to finally arrive at Álto del Léon, the end of today’s part of the GR-10.
We marked this route as Difficult, not so much because of technical difficulties (only the descent from La Peñota is a bit more challenging) but rather because of the total distance (>22km) and height (>1200m up and 860m down) covered in this route.
