Itinerary description
Trail from El Escorial to Robledo de Chavela through Zarzalejo
This route is the eighth part of a 10-day hiking trip through the Madrid province, from East to West following GR-10.
The trail starts at the station of El Escorial and leads us to Robledo de Chavela along quiet and beautiful paths. It's easy walking and perfectly suitable for runners and mountain bikers too. Asphalt roads are limited to town centres only, in this case El Escorial, Zarzalejo estación and Robledo de Chavela.
We leave El Escorial towards the south and soon swap streets for wide paths in beautiful surroundings. The GR signs (red-white stripes) only show up after a few kilometers so follow the track to find the correct route. We follow the train tracks all the way to the small town of Zarzalejo, more precisely the station area of the town. The actual centre lies higher up, to the north, close to Las Machotas, two peaks that are worth hiking on another occasion.
After leaving the town we continue along the train tracks. We pass an area which is very popular along rock climbers and follow along nice wide dirt roads further south.
When the train tracks dive into a tunnel, we climb a short, quite steep path to pass over to the area of Robledo de Chavela. After a few kilometers downhill, the town appears in between the hills. This route ends in the centre of town.
If you would like to take the train back, turn right before entering the centre and climb a few kilometers north to the town's train station.
