Itinerary description

Not sure why it says moving time 2h.20 only; perhaps because I was going slow at times during the scrambles up the hills! I walked for about 4.5 out of 5.5 hours. From Mecina Fondales down and across along gardens to Ferreirola and across the rocks to Busquistar (grade 2). Slippery mud just before you enter the latter. Then down into the Trevelez gorge on the escarihuela (zig zag track), across the river and back up the other side. Definitely a grade 3 and not always easy to find the right track. On to the main road at the old iron mine. From here you descend along a tiny, tricky and not always well marked path among orchards down into the gardens of Notaez. Here too muddy slippery path down close to the village. Take a break in shade near the small river on the far side of town, before scrambling up another zig zag scramble into the fields along a small path that often disappears, until it runs close along the road into Castaras. You definitely need GPS here; you'll see from my trail where I went the wrong way! I hitched a ride from here so you'll find the trail doesn't lead all the way. Last bit to Castaras seemed easier though. A hard but very well worth it day's walking, combining what most hikers do in two stages. Leaving somewhat late on an early June day means you don't stare into the low sun, but also brings the afternoon heat down whilst you scramble along the face of the hill, until you get closer to Castaras.
