Itinerary description
Lac Estaing starting point at the north east corner..sign leading up track into the woods, follow the steep track, it crosses a forestry lane a few times and reaches an clearing where you come across. Cabin d,Arriousec closes most of the time with sign saying private.
trail follows around cabin and small rise that leads to open valley..trail is well marked and used..easy walk for a few kms untill trail starts to climb steep at times..
Arrive at a small col and animal pens.to the south a few mts are cabin Barbat..did not check to see if they were open.
Continue up the trail crossing the steam and trail steepens until reaching the
col d,llheau (2242mts).
here i took small animal track up to a view point looking down the valley and then on a more open track to small ridge that overlooked the ski station of Cauterets (station du Lys)
head down towards the cabanes d,Arras ..(closed) ..trail not marked but easy to follow down grassy slopes until reaching small gorge that you cross to your right..the refuge can be seen from this point, follow the now rocky trail up and over rise to the the refuge .
Here you could continue on the GR10 towards Cauterets on the forestry track (8km)
I returned the same way back to Estaing
