Itinerary description
I did this route again in May 2024 and there are no changes; it took a small group of us 4 hour 45 minutes in total, including snack stops , photo stops and a quick swim in the Charco del Moro pool for some of our group. If you allow 5 hours that should be plenty of time.
Waypoints
Start here at Cortes railway station; la ruta comienza a la estación de Cortes de la Frontera.
Ruined farmhouse - go right and follow the red/white posts; Cortijo del Conde - vaya a la derecha y siga los postes GR141.
From the ruined farmhouse you follow the red and white GR141 posts on a narrow footpath which zigzags downhill to the German bridge. Take care because this section is steep and can be slippery.
Climb down the steps to the German bridge; baja los escalones hasa El Puente Alemán.
Built in 1918, the German bridge (which is actually Belgian!) is part of a 6km conduit that supplies water to the Buitreras hydro-electric power plant. This place is simply spectacular: it is both majestic and intimidating. Go through the tunnel; pase por el túnel.
The ceiling is very low so you need to crouch down to avoid hitting your head. A torch is sometimes needed; the floor can be wet and slippery and there are stone steps to climb down. Once you come out of the tunnel there are great views of the bridge; then you have to climb up some rocks to the left of the tunnel and follow a steep uphill path - this is a tough climb but only lasts about 15 minutes.
Vistas and suggested lunch spot; vistas y lugar de almuerzo sugerido.
You get great views of a vulture colony and nests on the large rocks opposite.
Go through the gate; pase por la puerta.
If the large gates are shut, there is a pedestrian gate on the left.
Turn right to return to your car; gire a la derecha para volver a su coche.
There are three excellent bars to enjoy some refreshments; Bar España, Bar Las Flores and Bar-Restaurante El Cani.

Another fabulous hike, great waypoints and very easy to follow, I've done this hike before and appreciate it more every time, thank you Lindsey!
Hello Karen, thank you! It's a lovely route and one of my favourites. The route works well for me in this direction - you do most of the climbing on a reasonably gentle ascent up to the ruined "Cortijo del Conde" before the descent to the German bridge and then (after another short but surprisingly tough climb) it's almost all downhill - giving you the chance to enjoy the fabulous views of the Guadiaro gorge, the vulture nests, and the river. Lindsey
Thanks for a Wonderful walk Lindsey! I would highly recommed this walk and as usual Lindsey's attention to detail makes it a pleasure to follow.
