Itinerary description
This is a deceptively difficult hike. The beginning is a fairly long ascent but it is not too steep. For the beginning of a hike, it’s very manageable. You get some nice views of La Palud and the surrounding mountains, as well as a bit of the gorge.
After the initial climb it is a fairly long and boring walk through forest, although it is very easy. We had beautiful weather and there were pretty wild flowers scattered along the path. It was peaceful and nice, but it went for a little too long.
Later the hike opens up into an exposed area on the side of the mountain with nice views and if you go to the left there is a beautiful view of Lac Sainte-Croix.
Then the rough parts begin. If you look at the elevation map this is at the one peak about 2/3 of the way in. The rest is steep descent on very rocky and slippery terrain. It is fairly dangerous and after hours of hiking is not that fun. The views of the lake are good though.
Overall, I’d recommend it but not more so than the GR4 from Castellane to Rougon or the Sentier Blanc Martel trail inside the Verdon Gorge.
